the quicker the better ...
I'm waiting for months now to buy a mac pro and the need is becoming real now that my powerbook started suffering from the 'Bridget Riley syndrome'.

Dual Quad Core i7

If Apple are thinking of releasing a more updated MacPro with multi-processesing at it's heart (Two Quad Core i7). It won't come from the current line of Nehalem chips becasue they don't support multi-processesing...

I'd imagine Apple will be waiting for the next re-version of Nehalem chips, that does support Dual Quad Core i7, before an update will be unleashed.

Be aware: multi-core and multi-processing are two different things.

Thats going to be in ages, i dont think we'll see it in this revision of the Mac Pro's

That's why I'm holding off until the next Mac Pro comes out next year to buy a new Mac, I'm already starting putting money away for it, I just do some minor upgrades on my current Mac Pro and that should hold me off until 2010, hope by then if not know the Mac Pro will have a re-design case and have slot loading drives or blu-ray support.

that's nailing it!!

Over the years I've come to find out that there is a vocal minority of computer users who are physically incapable of enjoying any computer hardware that has actually made it to market....they spend their days reading roadmaps and rumors, and tell everyone how obsolete the current hardware is compared to what is being promised. They continually hold off on updating; the next update will be great, they say, but the one after that will be even better. Finally circumstances force them to upgrade, and they buy a new machine only to moan loudly about how outdated it is already. Then the cycle begins anew...

I'm not targeting anyone in particular BTW...I've done it myself before. I used to be depressed after buying a computer, as I looked at the next update. Now I just enjoy what I have. Heck, I'm still using PPC. :D

find out what you need the computer for, then just do it! that'll put years back in your investment. who knows, you may even learn a new career! get more proficient with the software, instead of getting tangled up in the never ending saga of hardware. ;)

It won't be long, I'd imagine within the next four to six months or so.
Intel has a policy to update and release new chips, every six months... besides,
I can't see Apple taking a step back, to release a another line of Intel MacPro's with single CPU's.

Q1 2009. In two to three months. It's not that long.

It's funny you say that but I've never read anything that suggests the next refresh of the MPs (which I believe will be in Q1 2009) will be Nehalem. I hope you're right.

:D ROFL, that isn't going to happen any time soon.

Not for the Mac Pro, but Apple did jsut start usign Nvidia chipsets for the MacBooks, so it's not ou of the question that Apple might put AMD in some systems in the future to lower costs.

Of course, AMD has lost the lead to Intel at the moment for multi-core MPs, so it might not be soon.

When they're released by intel, what makes you all think that apple will be in a huge rush to put them in the MPs? The people that need a MP now will buy one now, and for those of us who are 'waiting' probably aren't that big of a percentage for apple to rush the new machines out...

I might have to buy a damn MBP while waiting for the newer MPs.. =(

Why new hardware when the OS is to weak for squeezing out all the power.

About earlier writings i fully agree when it comes to be forged to upgrade. I self upgraded from a G5 Quad to the latest Mac Pro. My intentions for migrating were not for the speed since i think that Apple and other OS manufacturers first should focus on getting the most out of their OS'es. For example my G5 never experienced the power it truely has under the hood.
I migrated for economic reasons like wattage, heat and noise. The Mac Pro nehalem will be a fabulous machine but i wonder when i overclock my 2.8 to 3.2Ghz which will be faster. first let Snow Leopard show that it is capable of the power of today's hardware. I am very much happy with the Harpertown i own today and it will last for a while untill there is real breakthrough in technology. About memory latency i heard that DDR3 has the problems and not DDR2. DDR3 is new and so more expensive. Although they might be faster when comparing the price of 4Gb's of DDR2 you can buy 2 GB's of DDR3 roughly.
I think 4 GB's will give you more speed improvement than 2.:)

I dont understand why everyone thinks their wont be a significant case re-design for the new mac pro. Every computer that has been upgraded this year has recieved a case re design thats significant, why wouldnt the mac pro?
