    Hi everyone.

What is the difference between NeoOffice and OpenOffice? I thought that NeoOffice was supposed to be based on OpenOffice so why make something separate?

    Thanks.

So if OpenOffice ever becomes native them NeoOffice will be pretty much redundant?

I use OpenOffice on XP and it is pretty good but I have had no end of problems with it under Leopard so I may gove NeoOffice a go.

Yes, I'd think so. However, "if" is the operative word. NeoOffice has ben around a long time already, but native OpenOffice is still not in beta stage and they've been talking about it for two years.

It will give us a hard decision, and NeoOffice looks a lot better than OpenOffice...

neooffice is quite a bit better, because it is native. i like the interface a lot better too, and it's fairly user friendly.

And NeoOffice already integrates with underlying OS X features, such as the system spell checker. There's no guarantee that OpenOffice will feature that level of integration... even "if" they actually finish the project.

This wouldn't be the first time they've "committed" to a true OS X version...

I've had to use Lotus suite for a presentation once. It made me appreciate MS Office a lot. Of course, that was when canceling an email or replying to all required navigating through three levels of menus. With such an unusable mail client, expecting more from its presentation tool was a mistake, but I had no choice.

I love Neo Office, but the icon and splash are so ugly! Purple, brown, red, and cream? Just horrible. Then again, the Open Office icon sucks a lot too.

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but how about now? Is OpenOffice native on Mac OS yet?

Open Office without X11 is only for Intel Macs.
Neo Office is still the only game in town for PPC Macs.

Neo Office would be my personal preference but iWork'08 has all the features I require. Love Numbers :D

I dug up this old thread......

Is NeoOffice still the preferred open source Office suite over OpenOffice for Mac OSX?

    Depends who you ask:

I still prefer NeoOffice as it behaves more like Mac software especially in the way it handles Fonts and it is only for Mac users.

OpenOffice is still a MS Clone and feels like it, as a Mac user you are also a very small fish in a very large Windows OpenOffice world.

Personal preference, both will probably get the job done.

    ^^^^^ Thanks.:)

I've been using NeoOffice for the past couple of months, and have been pretty happy with it. I haven't tried out OpenOffice, so I figured I'd ask to find out what the main differences are.
