Why do you consider controlling the optical drive speed necessary? Normally, unless you're trying to reduce heat output from your computer, you'd want the drive to spin at whatever speed it feels is best, no?
 
I just want to be able to perform detailed surface scans of optical media. I really don't see how Mac users can stand having to deal with Toast as their flagship CD/DVD software...

Windows has Nero, ISOBuster, Alcohol 120%...
