Quick question for Ecobee users, what if you have two or more people in your household? Can you make it so that it switches to away mode with both users are away instead of just the one user?

The ecobee uses local sensors to know when you're home, not cell phone geofencing. You can get geofencing using IFTTT, I think.

How long on average have you found your sensors to switch to away when it doesn't detect motion? We have sensors but sometimes feels like it rarely does the smart switch.

I think it depends on your schedule and how you set up the ecobee. It may detect a room as unoccupied but it won't adjust settings unless your schedule suggests away at a given time.

It takes a couple of hours of the sensors seeing no movement before it goes into smart away mode.

I've heard some of my friends with Nest get to take part in "Eco Trials" - they last about 5 days and then they receive a reimbursement from ComEd. Does Ecobee do this as well? I was leaning towards the Ecobee.

I had both and decided to stick with Ecobee. The nest was too smart, it kept switching temps when I didn't want it to and wouldn't switch when I wanted. The ecobee is just as easy to install and in some systems is easier. My system only had 4 wires with no 5th "common wire" to supply constant power and using the nest it completely shut down twice. The ecobee has an additional unit that allows you to wire your system so it supplies constant power and has been trouble free since installing.

I also really like the additional sensors the ecobee has. We have 3 dogs and the Nest ignored them and kept turning the heat down when we both left the house so my poor small dog was chilled when we came home from work. The ecobee sensor can tell when the dogs are in a room and turns up the heat on that floor.

Ecobee3 users here. We have 3 thermostats and 5 remote sensors total. It took a bit to sort though my schedule and comfort settings but now that I have its fantastic. I'm repeating everyone but the remote sensors are the main reason to really like this system. I tell it to focus only at night, the main living areas during the day. In the past I had to adjust dampers in the attic to make one of my rooms more comfortable since the stat was in another part of the house. Not any longer.
