Online research firm Net Applications today released data charting the growth of Mac OS X Snow Leopard's operating system market share since its launch just over a month ago. The data suggests that approximately 1% of computer users are currently running Snow Leopard, meaning that about 18% of Mac users (which represent approximately 5% of computer users worldwide according to Net Applications' data) are currently running Snow Leopard.
On August 28th, Apple released Snow Leopard, which is version 10.6 of the Mac operating system. Since then, it has had rapid adoption. On the day of Sept. 29th, the global share of Snow Leopard was .91%, and the overall Mac share was 4.93%. This means 18.45% of Mac users have upgraded to Snow Leopard in just one month after its release.

Readers will note weekly cycles in Apple's market share showing an increase in share on weekends, presumably due to the dominance of Windows-based PCs in business settings during the work week contrasting with primarily home computer use on weekends.

While I did buy it, I'm not upgrading until CS5 comes out. I'll probably get a SSD at the same time.

I imagine there are a lot of mac users running PPC machines...

And I am one of them. A proud owner of a dual 2 G5. A great machine, and while I would love the latest and greatest machine with the new OS, I simply have no reason to part with my G5, which I still consider to be a power horse...

Sadly I'll probably buy Windows 7 before Snow Leopard due to the lack of support on Adobe's side of things. That and a handful of other programs that aren't yet supported on SL that I need for work/school.

I wan to upgrade though...

I can't use SL until I get an upgrade from some of the software vendors who's software I use for work - There's probably quite a lot of us mac users out there waiting for software upgrades on peripheral software.

I have the upgrade - but I just have to wait patiently...

Smart people. I wouldn't recommend upgrading until the next revision comes through. 10.6.1 is still buggy enough to avoid-iWork, DVD player, PS, and other programs will just bomb every so often. Not nearly as bad as 10.6 raw, but it's still not good.

Ah you are part of the group that apple screwed over. I saw with in a year it will be near impossible to find new software for your computer thanks to apple intentionally forcing it to be obsolete. Sucks that you can not even get 5 years of use out of your computer.

How long you can use your computer depends on what your needs are. I have a 7yr old G4 running Leopard that I use as my 'daily driver' (Word, internet, etc.,). I also have an intel machine that I use for work and heavy lifting but the G4 keeps up surprisingly well.

Lethal

I have not upgraded yet. Plus I have a bunch of open projects that should be completed. I would like to see more success stories, and less borked stories. I am excited about upgrading though.

I haven't upgraded any of my 3 machines yet. The macbook will probably be first, but neither of the Mac Pros can go Snow until CS4 works properly AND efi's CWS and KM C6500 printer drivers get an update.

Supposedly they are working on a beta driver that should be available "in a few months"

Haha! Take that Micro$oft! Delicious...

I have it on my MBA but did not upgrade my home work machine - work has none yet - we will be upgrading to windows 7 on our macs first before we touch leopard.

I haven't had any problems with CS4 and SL. I mostly just run Photoshop and Illustrator though. I don't get any crashes.

I've been thinking about that myself. I only upgraded to Leopard because more and more software that I wanted to run (and that my computer is capable of running) was having new versions released for Leopard only which was fair enough, so I upgraded. The lack of choice this time is annoying.

I'm not upgrading until Snow Leopard, and update of applications, all become nice and stable. Based on my experience with Leopard, things didn't really settle down at least until 10.5.7 - in terms of Time Machine and Mail, hence, I'm using that as a cue and not upgrading to Snow Leopard at least until 10.6.7.

Since most of the updates are "under the hood", the most I'm missing out on is a vague notion of extra snappiness, and some nice touches which are not life-changing.

I'm loving the stability of Leopard 10.5.8 right now, and hope to move to an equally stable Snow Leopard 10.6.8 in about a year or more's time. Folks, this is the way to live life -- smooth, everything sunny. But I guess that's not how most people live, and that also reflects in choice of timing to upgrade to operating systems.

I would have thought the number would be higher. I suppose many people who own Macs solely 'because it's an all in one that just works' haven't given much thought to updating or seen any real compelling reason to update.

I'm one of the 17% who wonders why they bothered.

I've never had my macbook crash so much and so unpredictably. For something that purports to be an under-the-hood revamping it's made quite a mess under the hood.

I'm waiting for the font issues to be worked out with the Adobe and Quark design programs.... the additional, unexpected leading with fonts is unacceptable.
