iPad!!! Here's why:

You can compare specs all day or say "well, the netbook has a better file system..." but it's all about usability. Any advantages of the netbook are lost because they just don't work as well. It's going to take at least a minute to boot windows when you want to use it, and it just won't work as well. Yeah, if you put it in standby mode you can open the lid, type in the password, and it turns on quickly. Except when it doesn't. My HP has a bad habit of not reconnecting to the internet when waking up from sleep mode.

You won't be able to get apps, you won't have a bright colorful screen, it won't be a touchscreen, and you will definitely miss all the little touches that an iPad has, like automatically sizing text on websites so you can actually read it.

Yes, complete mobile photo editing is definitely possible on the iPad now. Snapseed is just amazing and can absolutely replace photoshop/lightroom/aperture when on the road. Photogene is another very capable editor, and beyond that, there are a ton of various photo apps for dealing with photos.

Snapseed and photogene are both great, but they don't even come close to lr and ps, 1/50 maybe.

I think a lot of people are thinking about low res atom netbooks. There are higher res and netbooks that come close to MBA performance for $400

Good advice from palpatine. Although the ipad is the better overall experience, don't presume you will easily get wifi wherever you are in Europe. I am just back from touring Italy and France with a netbook and ipod touch and in quite a few places the internet access was wired. I ended up using the netbook most of the time so that's what I would take in future. I would also rather lose a cheap netbook than an ipad.

Airport Express would be a good solution for that......

thanks :)
although i haven't lost anything on vacation, the emotional shock if i did would be a little less if it was a netbook.

i can't speak for every netbook manufacturer, but my experience with two asus models has been fantastic. dollar for dollar it was easily one of the best purchases i have made. unfortunately, for various reasons, i have moved on to an mbp, but not because of any flaws with the netbook.

the ipad works the same way. and, just like the ipad, my netbook always turns on. i think you need to try an asus :)

true. but, you also get a keyboard and the flexibility of a computer. ipads need to be synced with computers every once in a while, and the longer your trip is, the more difficult it is going to be. i love ipads, but they seem to work best when you can go home at night, and it takes a bit more work to utilize them on the road. i do it all the time, but like i said, it isn't easy.

Airport Express would be a good solution for that......
great idea! except, a lot of internet cafes are stingy with their power (covering up outlets) or access (providing computers only without access to outlets, or ethernet that only works for computers (the provide) that are logged into the network). mom and pop operations tend to have the worst set ups, but are the most friendly about this kind of stuff. if you go this route, don't forget about the adapters.

Checkout an app called Filterstorm ...http://filterstorm.com/
The pro version has lightroom like storage / organisation abilities plus the editing features are pretty amazing really

Update

Ok I said I'd let you know the outcome. He bought an Asus netbook in Aus, and brought it to the UK with him. He's now on the last few days of his Europe trip ( link herehttp://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=1r4vFZo&page_id=169248&v=6E ).
Just before leaving he said that he maybe should have spent the extra on the iPad, but he was worried about possible theft or damage. Judging by his blog it seems to have done an ok job.
While he's been away though, I bought an iPad.......

Thanks for sharing that. I saw some of the posts and the trip looked like a lot of fun.
