Netflix added over a third more subscribers than expected in the last quarter of 2016, the streaming video service revealed yesterday. According to its latest Q4 letter to shareholders, Netflix signed up 7.1 million new subscribers worldwide, almost two million more than analysts expected, despite price raises during the quarter.

The company put the boost down to the success of original shows like season 3 of Black Mirror and British drama The Crown which have garnered strong global followings. Notably, the company said millions of U.S. subscribers had tuned in to watch dubbed and subtitled versions of Brazilian series 3%, making it the first Portuguese-language TV show to travel meaningfully beyond Latin America and Portugal.
Internet video is a global phenomenon. Amazon Prime Video expanded recently to match our territory footprint, while YouTube remains far larger than either of us in terms of global video enjoyment minutes. Video consumption is growing on Facebook, and Apple is rumored to be adding video to its music service.

...The BBC has become the first major linear network to announce plans to go binge-first with new seasons, favoring internet over linear viewers. We presume HBO is not far behind the BBC. In short, it's becoming an internet TV world, which presents both challenges and opportunities for Netflix as we strive to earn screen time.
Netflix said it planned to release more than 1,000 hours of original programming this year, up from 600 hours in 2016. It also said it had recently signed a deal with comedian Jerry Seinfeld to stream Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee as well as two new stand-up specials and other shows he will develop.

Netflix announced earnings of 15 cents per share and revenue of $2.48 billion, beating Wall Street expectations of earnings at 13 cents per share. Netflix rose as much as 8.2 percent in after-hours trading following the earnings report, adding nearly $5 billion to the company's stock market value.

Well, let's see how many of them did the same as my wife did and signed a one month test subscription to view Gilmore Girls.

They have some good original shows. Stranger Things season 2 should come out soon, cant wait for it.

Just got done binge watching An Unusual Set Of Eventd as well and cant wait for season 2 of that.

Marco Polo is also a very good one for mature audiences.

Its becoming clear that people want original programming too. So - essentially - like cable but watch when you like - without the rip off prices.

Netflix original content is over all pretty good. I'd rather pay for the netflix of today rather than the Netflix of < 3 years ago...

More power to Netflix.

As impossible as it sounds, I wish Red Box could join the lot and offer current movie titles for $2 like they do with their DVD kiosks. Even $3 would be reasonable. I wouldn't mind if the catalog were limited to this year's movies.

Good to see it. Netflix has some great original programming and getting better. They completed their migration to AWS and service has been stellar. Offline downloads came to iOS recently. Cable and network TV are being forced to reconsider their service offerings. Give 'em hell Netflix.

No longer subscribe to Netflix BECAUSE of their original content, for which they gutted their movie catalogue. Don't watch "TV shows" whether they are produced by Netflix or CBS. I was only there for the movies.
You're in the minority. It's pretty evident that original programming helps to drive subscriptions. They're more sticky than a single movie. Movies may have been Netflix's foundation but it seems clear that series, original or rebroadcast, drive the future.

I am well aware of that. To each their own.

I appreciate companies that add value to their product. So many companies remove product options then either continue charging the same......for less, or charging MORE!! Sirius satellite radio is a perfect example. When I first got it I was able to have my car subscription AND listen online when not in my car. Well, typical of companies, the next thing I know, they take away my ability to listen online. Then they start charging another subscription fee in addition to what I already had if I wanted to listen over internet. Less value, less options, more money.

Thankfully, Netflix added value/options and hasnt increased price. Some may not see it as that big of a deal, but being able to download shows for offline viewing is a big plus IMO. Having had the ability with Amazon Prime, I really noticed during the times I wanted to use that option but couldnt because I was on Netflix. A lot of companies (Hulu) dont give their customers that option. And if they did, they would certainly charge another $3 - $4 a month for the privilege. Got to give credit where credit is due.

I'm another Netflix newbie. I still buy Blu-rays of anything I want to keep unless it's literally not on the format (which is reasonably rare these days thankfully), but I'll admit Netflix has a good selection of exclusive stuff, and I feel like I've already got about 6 months' value out of my first (free) month.

Apple should've bought this company years ago and let it run independently.

It would be a much more natural acquisition for Amazon. After all, Netflix exclusively uses AWS as its infrastructure and Amazon is competing with its own customer. If Netflix will ever be for sale, it will be Amazon who buys them.

That being said, Netflix is the only streaming provider here in Germany that actually caters to my needs: Original audio tracks and subtitles in the original language. And many others in Germany wanted that, too. Netflix did their homework prior to their launch in Germany.

Good for Netflix. They release a lot of great original content, and I'm sure the fact that they now allow downloads on iOS devices helped a lot.

Now if they could just clean up the interface on 4th Gen TV.

It's not the fault of Netflix really, they have some fantastic movies. But when you have people like Murdoch who owns the production company AND all the distribution channels, your not exactly going to get rich pickings. Netflix and Amazon are a breath of fresh air in the heavily monopolistic media channels we have in the UK, and if Murdoch buys the rest of Sky it'll be even worst.

Hopefully sport will start to be put into Netflix and Amazon.

I like a lot of their original programing, House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, Arrested Development, Bojack Horseman, and the Marvel TV-shows to name a few.... I love DD and Luke Cage didn't disappoint.

But, they are not all winners, OITNB was good, but took a turn after the first season. Sense8 could have been good, but they made it so goofy, the acting is subpar, and the dialog is horrible. I am not sure how it has an almost 5-star rating.

I haven't seen all of the Netflix originals, but most of the ones I have seen are top quality shows. I wish Netflix would do more scifi/fantasy shows.

It was all Stranger Things. Best show they have released.

They release a fair amount of content for every age group so they are definitely a fixture in our home.
