Loving all the demands for “lossless” in the comments even though basically no one could tell the difference between an mp3 and a wav or flac lossless in a double blind test.

There are also studies saying people can hear the difference:

https://www.audiostream.com/content/its-official-people-can-hear-high-res

I have heard from a lot of people that they can hear the difference. Ears are different, and it would not surprise me if some people are super sensitive to quality sound. I hope that as higher quality sound and equipment becomes available for the mass market that people will have the opportunity to see what they have been missing.

Although a big improvement, remember that that 640-768 kbps is divided among multiple channels. Compare with the 1.5 Mbps soundtrack on a DTS-MA blu-ray.

With the proper equipment and provenance a great high-res recording will put you right in the middle of the instruments, unless your hearing is significantly impaired. I hope you get that opportunity some day.

In need of a proper home theater setup. Homepods were never designed with that use case in mind, even though at least a few people here shoehorned them into that application.

They sure as hell sound better than the soundbars that Wallyworld and Worstbuy are hawking.

HBO has become a horror show of bad compression- last Sunday’s Game of Thrones really emphasized how awful HBOs current video compression is

I read an article somewhere (can't remember where) recently that said the streaming bandwidth for HBO is higher when you're streaming it after subscribing through Amazon, vs the HBO Now or HBO Go apps. I'd be interested to hear more if this is true!

Pretty excited about this. There needs to be a close to disc audio for streaming services on some platform. Just finished my 5.2.4 setup and I already noticed a huge difference from blu rays to any streaming service. It’s not even in the same ballpark of quality.
Even my friend that’s not into all the details as I am says he’ll now buy discs just for the audio quality difference( he just finished his first 5.1 setup).
I think it’s much harder to tell the difference with video as it is audio. Audio comes to life if you use a physical disc.
How much of a difference is this going to make with Netflix?

Now if only they gave the option to use the 2-Channel audio track by default for those without a 5.1 system. Yes, the 5.1 still works but it is much quieter.

How do I turn this on? In Netflix Settings?
It's not something you turn on. If your streaming device is atmos capable as is your receive it will detect and send it. You do have to have the Netflix 4k plan though.
And it's not new, Netflix has had atmos for quite awhile.

huh. The Xbox One X already has Atmos audio, provided you have the proper setup. i wonder if this announcement is about other platforms or just an upgrade in general for all (included the X)?

Atmos is going from 448 kbps to 768 kbps. Says right there in the article.

It sure will.

No it won’t.

Huh? I haven’t seen it, and why the announcement today? I’m confused.
The announcement is just because they are increasing the audio bitrate, not because they're adding atmos.

You need the 4k plan to get atmos. I believe you said you already had this. ATV4k plugged in to your receiver? Audio settings correct?

Gotcha. I use Roku Ultra and a Samsung sound system with Atmos (kicks butt). And I pay for premium.

But now that I did some googling, I see that for some reason, Netflix doesn’t have the Ultra ad an Atmos approved device. Well, that just blows!

It's a bump in maximum-allowed bitrate across the board. Atmos-capable devices (Xbox One S/X, AppleTV 4K, etc,) get a higher bitrate as part of the Atmos support, just as before. I'm just amazed that their previous Atmos implementation was less than 768 kbps!

Thanks for the explanation.
I'm not sure the roku ultra supports atmos? Or if your Samsung sound system does either? Is that a receiver that you plug your roku in to?

For certain pieces of content you can hear the differences between lossless and lossy, but you really have to work at it. It shows up at the edges of a given sound and it sounds like fuzziness, which is why you need better equipment to hear it; at some point the fuzziness is due to your equipment, not the signal.
