I hate the idea of nested app stores etc. How would parental controls work with such app? Would i be able to control individual games that my kids play and set different limits?
No, and this is costing game developers big cash. ?
Most of these top games are free to play and rely on kids without a concept of money to click on purchases.
There’s a big push to make Apple look like the bad guys so developers can bypass safeguards.

I think JavaScript programmers are very talented and I think streaming platforms like Netflix gaming offer or expand access to folks without top tier hardware. :)

That said, you have to have some nerve to tell Apple, the makers of macOS on Unix, that you know more about Computer Science when you’re opting to use JavaScript over a native solution like Unity.

They could also limit heavily what OS services and data a downloaded app can have access to.
Not really, there are a LOT of limits placed on Apps as a part of being on the AppStore. These are all methods that are useful for developers, so you can’t cut them out completely, but you CAN curtail their use. Just by saying, “You can do this, but if you do it in THIS way, we’ll kick you off the AppStore.” It’s a good deterrent.

Without “delisting from the App Store” as a threat, developers are free to do whatever they think they can get away with. UNLESS you’re saying that they should have a second tier of far less functional applications. If that’s the case, anything they put into place, an enterprising developer can just offer the customer a secondary app that would patch the OS to give FULL control to the app. Considering how many folks today appear to do their DARNDEST to compromise themselves via email and the internet, you’d definitely see a rise in malware.

I know you could download a 3rd party anti-malware/virus program, but like Windows Defender I think there should be a native Apple provided service to do this.
In a quick search, I found “Even with the real-time malware protection Microsoft Defender offers, the false positive detection rate is much higher than average.” So, anyone on Windows would be seeing more “warnings” than with an alternate solution because, for good reason, Windows Defender is more strict. Even with Windows Defender, it would be reasonable to download a better tool.

When it really comes down to it, the largest security vector on ANY system is the human brain with admin rights to it. That brain should be aware of potential threats and, if they are concerned about their security (again, primarily because of the potentially insecure things they desire to do), they should be expected to take appropriate steps rather than depend on any built-in default tools.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this means Netflix can offer Higher Performance Game Apps, since they will be "native" iOS Game Apps, vs web-based.

And by higher performance, I really mean, significantly-reduced Latency !

Is my understanding correct ?

"Gurman writes that while the solution will work, it's not an approach that will put Netflix Games "in the best position to succeed." Netflix's service isn't currently cloud-based on Android or iOS, but that's expected to change on Android"

I don't think that's the plan. These games are mobile games, and there is no need to stream them from the cloud.

We are living in the age of spyware by murdering regimes and ransomware by criminals and dictatorships.

Any tiny software bug or security bug will be exploited by them to kill people, collect data, steal money.

A cute game just like a cute meme coin is a perfect cover for nefarious activity.

Imagine a cute game gets distributed. Kids hear about it on TikTok or whatever. It promises kids the chance to make money in the game. They install it by side loading and start playing. The game contains malware that takes over the device in the background and collects information on the kid and their whole family. What if this kid's parents were in politics or business? They all become compromised.

If you're not aware how dangerous this is to our future then you're extremely ignorant. Ideologically brainwashed by whatever ideas that have been fed to you, sometimes unconsciously.

We have to tighten up security in every possible way because politicians are bought off by extremists and dictators all the time, so they can be slow to act. The companies who make our phones have a high responsibility on their shoulders to make sure we are safe.

kids are using MacOS and Windows. What are you talking about? I know where that comes from, really, really bad regimes were built on top of your narrative. Check out Twitter being MBPs Max ….

go and brainwash someone else.

at the centre of this discussion is money, nothing else. Of course Apple interest is in getting as much money as possible out of the available possibilities. If Apple can somehow be an intermediary between people and all businesses, from health, to banking and housing … that is what they will aim to be. As everything is moving to digital, being Apps one of the core tenants of the digital architecture, an App Store is the perfect leverage to achieve that while security and privacy the perfect emotional motivator for a new age in the concentration of power.

We always lived in such an age.

For the games on offer, I have a strong suspicion they could be done in HTML5. We’re not talking about any high performance games here. :) Search the Google Play store for “Netflix” for videos of the games.

Apple should allow side load at the user risk with one requirement.
sideloading should void waranty when it comes to software, and if you Brik your phone- it should be conside as an accident on the user end ( there are precedents on how to deal with this). ( liability should fall on the distributor of those services- ( which they can always deny on their TOS)
ON THE NOTE OF ALLOWING USERS TO SIDELOAD.
People keep putting epic game as a trusted company. Epic operations are underhanded and unconventional when it comes to it’s business dealing. This is unconfirmed, and purelyabout how I feel about the company based on repported moves. Epic game is the kind of compagny which would do the wrong thing if they think they can get away with it.
I really Don’t have any trust for this company- if your competitors/ business partner who can afford big lawyers are being tricked and mistreated like that, what about a simpleton like me? What’s to stop them from sneaking spyware in their software because I agreed to it? Or have A drm that would prevent me from playing mods? as a consumer
EPIC STORE is UNSAFE because of their leadership And corporate tactics.

When a side loaded app steals all your contact details and sends them fake messages from you or breaks your banking apps then you gonna say ‘OK…no side loading at all even with this one user risk agreement’

Say no to "cloud gaming" and the continued undermining of ownership.

I will have the cloud gaming and the ownership depending on the game. But the second one never really existed anyway. You buy a license for the game not ownership and if you bought physical media there were copy protections on it just like downloading it from a game store. The ****ing discs always die in the end.

This is so so stupid. How can Apple not see how bad of an idea this is?!

It’s the video game equivalent of forcing Netflix to make users download each movie from the App Store separately. Makes zero sense.

“I hate the idea of nested movie apps. How would parental controls work? Would I be able to control individual movies that my kids can watch and set different viewing limits?”

Lol

How else would they have done this? For streaming, sure there can be one app since nothing is on the phone, but in Netflix case they are all on-device. Would people prefer a massive Netflix app with every game included in it!?
It would work the same way as downloading a film for offline viewing.

Basically, the list of available games are all visible on Netflix, but you’d have to download a title in order to play it.

Reading some comments here, it's pretty obvious a lot of these people have never used Windows or Android and have no idea that Third party Game/App Stores exist almost every where except on iOS. Heck even Mac OS allows side loading and it's actually preferred by open source companies as well. Apple even tries to prevent you when you side load an app from an untrustworthy source, but the whole side loading process goes smoothly when you try to install a trusted app like Firefox or even VLC.

If that’s Apple “trying to prevent” it’s an extremely weak try :) Apple just lets folks know that they should understand what they’re doing before they take the next step, that’s it. If the user wants to install, they can go right ahead and install VLC or install that malware they got from a trusted friend, nothing stops them.

No actually you've to goto system preferences and then privacy to manually allow an untrusted app. It's pretty rare because Apple has a pretty large database of trustworthy sources. My point is there's nothing stopping Apple to allow the same for iOS except their sheer greed to keep their control over the market.

How though? My boss would email me like 100 times a day.
I’ve never touched a Blackberry (well, maybe one time for 5 minutes in a Verizon store). I used a flip phone up until I got the iPhone 4. As I mentioned, your experience is not universal. My boss has never emailed 100 times in a day. Maybe a dozen times, if we were going back and forth on something, but most discussion has been conducted face to face (historically) or on phone/videoconferencing (these days). And if I was answering dozens of emails from my boss, I’d be doing it on my Mac, with a real keyboard, not on a tiny screen with an onscreen or two-thumb keyboard (that part held just as strongly, of not more so, back before the iPhone existed). Right tool for the right job.
