Unfortunately, in Canada it could get rather harder for subscription services to take off that don't belong to the ISPs such as Rogers ( aka robbers ) and Bell.

The CRTC are working towards trying to crush any competition to Rogers, Bell, Shaw etc and enforce UBB. CRTC are in a review stage after a consumer and indie ISPs backlash ( and being told to review by the cabinet ).

However, since the CRTC board are made up of ex-Robelus execs, it won't be too long until CRTC give the go ahead for UBB to enable the big ISPs ( who also are Cable and Satellite providers ) to squash competition and ensure they are the only ones who can provide media content to the consumer, while continuing to charge higher prices for even lower quality.

Great for Netflix and all those that can enjoy it..........only in the US!!!!!!!!!!! thats why the Apple TV is so limited other than the US. Wish we had a similar feature on our UK AppleTVs. And no not that iTunes rental crap. Waaaay to expensive here in the UK. Ive always said that if the UK had such a service as Netflix available on AppleTV then I would subscribe. Until then, Handbrake is our friend!

+1

The selection for kids is great. My son loves Thomas and although he can and does watch the same things over and over, he was thrilled to death yesterday when he got to choose which one he wanted. There were at least 10 for him to choose from.

And the many Princess/Tinkerbell/Disney movies that I have access to on my iPhone and iPad has saved me in restaurants more than once.

Agreed - selection for kids is fantastic and it has a fixed low monthly fee with no hidden surprises and they can watch it as often as they want. My kids love it and use it on the computer/iPad/iPod.

the on demand selection for adults on the other hand is not that great ... most newer movies require DVD plan - which again, is not very expensive just a tiny little bit more inconvenient, but works good since I watch movies only once (whereas the kids what their 'demand' movies over and over again).

AppleTV is on the wish list and will be used for netflix and streaming movies I own from the Mac ... but I don't see myself paying on a per movie basis - I just like the 'one flat fee' subscription model, paying per movie can get expensive fast (and all the Children movies, I have to own since otherwise I would have to pay every time for the rental when once of the kids want to watch it again).

I absolutely love Netflix on my Apple TV. More content would always be nice, but the browsing and watching experience is great.

Now someone just needs to find a working business model for cable boxes/recorders so they aren't such junk.

IMO Netflix blows....they dont have any good movies.....i sit back in front of my AppleTV and search endlessly through the movies available to stream and find nothing good....there are a few movies that are good...but the streaming selection is horrible...the TV shows are really good though, they have a ton of good shows. I wish movies would come out sooner on Netflix for streaming, sucks everytime i find a movie i really want to watch, the only option is to get it mailed home to me.... and thats my 2 pennies about Netflix

It's all about the subscription

reason why netflix dominates, is because they use a subscription model. for a $10 bill a month i get dvd's and unlimited streaming. If itunes offered $10 per month to watch all their content streamed, i'd cancel netflix in a heart beat.

++ rentals are so yesterday and get too easy out of control ($-wise) - fixed low monthly fee and I am all for it.

It can only get better though, right?
I've gotten to the point where I will randomly pick something. Found the Ong-bak movies that way. Awesome Thai fighting flicks.

Yeah, I was initially skeptical of Netflix's model and their streaming selection in Canada is still kinda crappy, though it does get better by the week. I decided to try their 30-day free trial and I was actually blown away by how much content I was able to watch. I've gone through lots of Mythbusters, some old TV series (remember Earth 2?), I'm currently addicted to Joss Whedon's Dollhouse series. Also lots of documentaries, comedians, and older movies that I kept meaning to watch (Sneakers, Starman, Johnny Mnemonic, etc.)

Between Netflix and iTunes (and OTA broadcast) I have not subscribed to cable or satellite in years, and I intend to keep it that way.

Can the article be made a bit clearer because it's not altogether clear to me.

So, the initial article said Apple had 65% of revenue right?

But now the better figures suggest Netflix has over 60% of the market?

If that's right, then it needs to be made clearer that Apple is actually a small/insignificant provider of streamed/online video.

Unless I am mistaking something?

Your first paragraph answers your second.

Agreed. And I'd have to agree with other peoples comments... just buy them. Apple has the cash... buy Netflix and away you go right to the top in Video.

I love netflix.. I use it basically to watch old TV series I never got around to watching, or old movies.. Also I watch the occasional documentaries as they lull me to sleep.

Netflix streaming is definetly not for people that want new movies as their online selection is very limited in this regard.

Overall, its worth the 7.99 monthly charge.

So, if I'm reading this right:
- Apple gets 65% of viewers' money, while
- Netflix delivers 61% of content viewed.
No?

No.

If you read it carefully...

Last month, we reported that Apple was dominating the market for individual download and streaming movie content in the United States, representing nearly 65% of total spending. We noted at the time that the survey did not include streaming services such as Netflix and on-demand streaming offerings from cable companies, but new data from NPD on the broader market now puts those omissions into context.

Unless I am mistaking something?

The fine print in the first article notes the exclusion of flat-rate providers.

However, even if included methinks the numbers would work out about the same. Three iTunes rentals equal a month (or more) of unlimited Netflix.

There is much success now but there are already murmurs about caps being introduced on heavy users for ADSL/Cable/Wireless as well as traffic shaping as some companies will try to maximise profits by ensuring that alternatives are less desirable than their own offerings.
