Netflix today announced the launch of a new toggle that will let Netflix users turn off autoplay previews, which has been a controversial Netflix feature for years now.

When browsing through Netflix, the service is designed to play previews of the content that you stop on, which usually includes a trailer. Until today, Netflix has offered no option to turn these previews off.

As of now, though, you can disable them by opening up Netflix, selecting your profile, selecting Playback Settings and toggling off "Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices."

Changing the setting will prevent content from playing while you swap through different shows and movies. The setting will need to be enabled on a per-profile basis as it is not account wide.

I stopped using Netflix years ago because of this. Switched to the DVD only plan. May actually re-subscribe now.

Too late. Already cancelled months ago and don't miss it for a moment. So much good content out there, and Netflix lacks in quality content.

Finally. The last I need need is my kids begging for a dozen more shows they saw on preview. Also last thing they need.

I just changed the setting on my iPad, using Safari to log into my Netflix account. I then logged out of Netflix on my Apple TV, logged back in and it works! 🥳

Maybe Netflix should focus on its core business (which is bleeding terribly) and stop abusing its own user interface to try and trick customers into thinking there is something new and interesting to watch.

Auto play previews...
Auto play into something you never asked to watch...
Constantly changing the posters of every single title to make you think something changed since last time...
50 rows of things to watch, that are all the same thing in a different order...

They are a joke.

(Note: While I do actually enjoy seeing old movies have new original posters created by the photoshop artists at Netflix, it is a mild amusement at best. In truth, it is just a scummy, deceptive tactic.)

*SWOON* At long last, our prayers have been answered! Now I might actually browse Netflix again instead of only going with a very specific show in mind. Who knows what wonders await me!

While 95% of me hates the auto play feature, the other 5% won’t let me disable it because I’ve discovered some good shows with it.

Recently signed up. I was about to blockbuster Netflix because of the incessant previews as soon as I hit the HP. This was a no-brainer from the start. That's what happens when you focus too much on cool recommender algos and neglect UX.

I’d also like a button for “I started watching but it was ****. Stop bugging me to finish watching it.”

YES! Instead, it thinks because I started it I need to finish it. I like watching comedians, but when I can tell I'm not going to like one, I stop. Then Netflix not only wants me to finish watching it, it starts recommending more content from that or like comedians... the exact opposite of the behavior I want!

I wish more channels would do this. I actually wish some of them had a specific channel so I can figure out what I should watch next.

Why is this such a big deal.
