It's like Microsoft's version of Flash.

It's annoying to have to install it, but it should be harmless.

I signed up fine without going through Facebook and I think I'll try the service out on iPad and then consider installing Silverlight.

Yes, but even not so recent popular stuff isn't there.

Bourne? no
Bond? no
Ironman? no
Pixar? no
Crank? no
Matrix? no
Star Wars? no
Lock Stock? no
Godfather? no
Shawshank? no
Batman / Dark Knight? no
Lord of the Rings? no

and so on.

This is heavily geek/action-movie skewed, hopefully the populace at large is looking to watch movies that are a bit more spread out genre wise but unfortunately for Netflix those are the kind of people who are initially going to check out Netflix and they are going to be disappointed. Oh well...

But given how cheap it is, it may still be worth it.. If you can find 4 movies and 10 tv shows a month to watch, it already more than pays for itself. The convenience factor is great and it is worth a pound or two.

- Should have better support for streaming to Apple devices
- If you want streaming-only, it's a lot cheaper
- Lovefilm's streaming video quality is awful.

I'm going to try it out for a month and then decide, but I expect I'll end up dumping Lovefilm.

i might give the trial ago then, love film's picture quality on the ps3 is awful, just noticed its on there too.

Signed up and quite disappointed with the selection! I didn't expect DVD releases or even sky movie releases but I did expect some current films! Will see if it improves over the next month but won't be cancelling my Sky movies just yet.

I had to restart my Apple TV to get rid of the "Netflix is not currently available" error message. All working now but it was too late to watch anything by the time I fixed it. :)

I'm giving it a go. Will probably watch some Dexter to start with, just as soon as it kicks in on Apple TV (still error for me).

iOS app looks ok. Wont be installing Silverlight on my Macs, though!

Seems to be thin on content at the moment :( If it doesn't improve I'll cancel at the end of the trial.

Had to log out of Facebook in order to sign up with my email address. Hate sites that try and force Facebook integration. Nearly gave up on trying it right there.

Those were just the first dozen or so 'popular' movies I thought of. I'd welcome any similar list you want to try that you think represents a more 'spread out genre'.

Personally, I was most interested in art house and foreign movies. There are a few good ones, but over those genres their selection is equally disappointing.

Even less than that. I found some TV shows where I'd paid almost £2/episode on iTMS, so for those it's definitely good value.

There's enough stuff on there to make the service cost effective for me; but I don't think that should stop me from speaking out about how poor the selection is in the main. I was hoping to cancel my Lovefilm subscription in favour of Netflix. I'm not sure I can do that.

I guess it depends whether you look on it as 'is there enough on there to keep me entertained for a good while'? The answer is Yes, and the price is great.

If you're a film buff and you want to check out new movies, or you have specific movies you're hoping to watch - then not so much.

I signed up, I was surprised to see Ireland getting the service at the same time as the UK.

Watched a film on my Apple TV last night, and a couple of TV programmes. Worked great even with out lousy Irish country broadband.

Happy to pay €6.99 for it, much cheaper than renting movies from iTunes, or paying for a SkyMovies subscription.

It's cleverly buried at the back of an AV rack :( But I'll power down the rack tonight if it's still not working. Thanks.

For me, I had to choose reset AppleTV (not restore) and just entered my passwords again and Netflix began working properly. Kept timing out on me prior to that.

Not complaining but what's the business benefit for Apple here. Possibly more Apple TV sales or do they get a cut of the Netflix subscription. I ask because for me to buy a tv series from Apple via the Apple TV would set me back 10 to 15 pounds but yet I can now stream the same series in HD from Netflix paying a low subscription and have the benefit of loads more content that also appears in Apples own catalogue.

Would it have not been more profitable for Apple to deliver a subscription service and do deals directly with the content owners. Allowing Netflix onto the Apple TV platform seems to eat into their potential future profits especially with the Apple TV set due to be released in the next year or so.

Massively Disappointed with it.

Why not get you product sorted before releasing it in the UK? Not a half arsed effort of mediocre shows.

Does Netflix UK do HD streaming? If so can someone report what the quality is like? Thanks

Yes it does on the Apple TV - I spotted this last night while trying random scamples of tv and films. I noticed that Blitz was in HD (though presumably only 720p). Quality was generally good with no stuttering or pauses on my 7 meg. broadband.

So far I am impressed with Netflix. The quality is way better than that of Lovefilm, which I have used for years for rental by post (way back since they were ScreenSelect) and more recently for streaming on PS3.

While I will still continue to rent blu-rays and games by post from Lovefilm, I will probably sign up for Netflix. The interface on bother the ATV and iPad are great and I like how the presentation of content is tailored to your tastes. If only Lovefilm had got on this earlier... Silly Simon Calver...

How would you compare it to BBC HD for example?

It seems to just be me but I found the interface a disappointment (especially on iPad and Apple TV), very poor in comparison to the UK catch up apps (on iPad). Not so bothered about the content especially as I'm sure it will improve over the coming months.

But I love the convenience of being able to watch on my Apple TV so I think I'll be sticking with it after the trial, would be different if the catch up services were available on it though.

Understood firestarter. It is indeed disappointing that art house and foreign movies are not yet represented well. Let us hope that improves.

Trade, Sky for netflix

I Canceled my contract with Sky for Netflix on Apple TV. Rather pay £5.99 than £74.68 a month :D & No Adverts to do with mr.go compare

This is recommended

I was hoping to cancel my Lovefilm subscription in favour of Netflix. I'm not sure I can do that.

When it comes to streaming, I think the Netflix UK catalogue is about the same if not better than Lovefilms. I was very disappointed with the selection available on Lovefilm...

I signed up last night to the free trial, running it on my iPad, iPhone, PS3 and XBMC Media centre (althought I am having some issues with this!).

I was disappointed that Greys Anatomy isn't listed.

Looks interesting. Any word on subtitles for UK people?

Netflix claim 80% of their streaming content in the US and Canada has subtitles (up from 30% last year which is good progress.) Can someone try a few films / TV shows in the UK / Ireland?

(If it's only 50% subtitles or less, would Netflix give me a 50% discount? Hah don't bloody think so.)

Quite a lot of the content I've seen has Subtitles. They work on the different platforms as well which is cool.

If you're somewhere that Netflix offers service you might as well try the Free Trial.
