I think people are basing this on other streaming service prices with and without ads.

Examples:
Paramount+ with ads is $5 cheaper than Paramount+ without ads ($4.99 versus $9.99)
Peacock Premium with ads is $5 cheaper than Peacock Premium without ads ($4.99 versus $9.99)
HBO Max with ads is $5 cheaper than HBO Max without ads ($9.99 versus $14.99)
Hulu with ads is $6 cheaper than Hulu without ads ($6.99 versus $12.99)

I see, thanks!

Netflix is still the only streamer who offers a non-HD tier, right? Whereas all those other streamers offer full HD.

I wonder if Netflix would consider an HD with ads package at $7.99 and standard-def with ads at $4.99

I'd also love to know the breakdown of Netflix's current customer base.

480p one screen... full-HD two screens... 4K four screens...

My thinking is... for all the people who are cancelling Netflix because it's too expensive... would they go down to 480p, one screen, with ads, to save money?

Or would they just drop it altogether?

In this past week on Apple product forums I have read that Apple is Greedy, elitist and racist. Today Netflix is “money hungry” and Microsoft is (fill in the blank here). My sense is that many of the embittered Marxist/Leninists found in these groups are people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. They resent actually having to pay for services. There’s an excellent piece in The NY Times today about the rapidly shrinking US Middle class. This augurs well for a winnowing of disenfranchised Apple product users and angry streaming media subscribers. Facing a housing crisis, food insecurity, and rising commodity prices we should see a significant decline in their participation in these forums. I urge the many unhappy posters here to drop your subscriptions to exploitative streaming media sources. Similarly many impoverished Apple product users will be forced off the platform by Adam Smith’s invisible hand”. Both groups will be much happier not being stooges of the capitalist system.

“Winter is not Coming! It’s here!” And it’s beautiful to see!!

I believe so, yes.

Possibly. They may launch the ad-supported plan with "Basic" only but expand to other plans later depending on how things go. However, I think a Standard/HD plan with ads (if that were to happen) would be more like $9.99 than $7.99.

I don't have a breakdown but my understating is that their "Standard" plan is the most popular.

I'd like to see Netflix split out options like resolution, simultaneous screens, etc. so that, for example, someone could get 4K on a 1 screen plan or 480p on a 4 screen plan.

Netflix hopes so.

I expected this take from someone, took longer than I expected.

When you are on a budget, every bit counts. Sure it is only 5 bucks but there could be something else that is only 5 bucks and another thing, you see where I am going. All those "only 5 buck" differences add up. You can be on a budget without being destitute.

Fact remains it is a 50% discount to watch some ads.

Same concept as "You don't need that grocery item if you need a coupon to get it". I guess you never had to worry about this kind of thing though in your life so props to you.

Not really. Using a coupon just make it cheaper, I would use a coupon on Netflix. Something closer to reality is that using a coupon and having to walk to the other end of the city just to save that extra $5. If $5 is that much worth it to you, maybe you should lay off the luxuries like Netflix since its not a necessity.

And people react positively to lower prices. My point was that given the negative reaction (including choosing to unsubscribe) of even $1 or $2/month increases, a $5/month or so lower price could certainly be meaningful enough to convince a number of people to subscribe or re-subscribe.

i can see paying + no ads, I can see free+ads , but paying + watching ads is just a no for me unless that is the only teir available or the no ads tier is extremely more expensive say:-

$10 with ads
or
$60 no ads

Ad-supported plans certainly aren't for everybody which is why streaming services offer options. For some, a $5 or $6 discount/savings is worth it while for others it may need to be a lot higher.

Approximately 70% of Hulu subscribers (based on 2019 numbers) are on the ad-supported plan which is $6.99 compared to $12.99 for the no-ads plan. For those 70%, the $6 savings is apparently worth it.

you know you are right. I keep making the mistake of thinking rationally, but the real world is irrational. Researched numbers do not lie, and indeed if 70% are willing to subscribe for $6 less on Hulu then Netflix should do the same because that is what the people want.

There is a tv show called days of our lives that has been airing since 1965. I am not sure who follows a tv series for 57 years, but seems people do so the show keeps on going!
