They’ll probably announce it tomorrow at earnings call, really wondering how many subscribes they already lost.

This will further bite them and I’ll just use a VPN change then.

Question. How does Netflix know it's my mother watching with my shared password and not me visiting her using my account on her TV?

Or am I only allowed to use my Netflix service in my home? If so, WTF!!?

I split the cost of Netflix with my mom in another state. Does that meet Netflix's definition of "paying" or are they really ready for the significant customer churn over $3/mo? They are becoming just like the cable companies that they sought to differentiate themselves from. Time to fire up your VPN running on a $20 linux block and not have to pay Netflix $36/yr for nothing.

My guess is they are tracking by IP so they see your mother's TV and your TV both accessing the account on a regular basis and because you cannot be in both locations at the same time, your mother is sharing your account.

I would presume some type of IP / MAC Address tracking.

If you travel, your IP will change with each new access point so it should not be difficult to conclude you are using your own device based on these fluctuations.

If you give your account credentials to a different household, that IP range will not change often and being different from the IP range of the devices in your home, it should not be difficult to conclude you are account sharing and trigger the additional fee.
Define often? I get the premise. However, will college kids in school for the semester have to pay for their own account? Or should we expect a "student plan?" If I travel for a month, three, or six (yes I've had a 6 month business trip) do I need to pay more?

Define often?

I presume Netflix's definition of a "household" is a physical location where the primary account holder is registered for billing purposes and where they are seeing continuous connections (so logins every day or weekly).

So if they see similar activity at a location in another city, county or state (as in this other location also logs in either daily or weekly), they would consider that other location as one that the primary account holder has likely shared their credentials with.

However, will college kids in school for the semester have to pay for their own account?

I would be inclined to presume Netflix would believe they were entitled to the extra fee since they are not located in the same physical household. However, they might also make a "student exception" where you inform Netflix of the school name and logins from there would be exempted from the fee. I could also see a similar exception for another property (like a vacation home) that the primary account holder uses for a period of time a year.

If I travel for a month, three, or six (yes I've had a 6 month business trip) do I need to pay more?

I presume if you are the primary account holder and have an engagement that would keep you away from home for an extended period that you could make a successful request to Netflix since you are not account sharing per their definition (again, based on the current reading).

Unless Netflix change their platform to be more affordable, and/or better value, this is the beginning of the end for them. They can’t keep paying for premium content whilst reducing the quality or the experience for more money.

Time to start a phased approach to streaming. Cancel Netflix and a few others. Then select just one for a month and watch through my backlog. Then cancel and onto another platform.

I was about to subscribe to Netflix, and they released their latest list of dropped/dropping movie, and many on that list I either loved, or wanted to see again, so I passed. I'm not saying they should carry ALL movies ever made (but it would be nice) but maybe they should not announce the movies they are dropping. For me, that list was a deal breaker... *sigh*

And how exactly will they determine who is sharing a password with another household versus those who travel extensively for work and use Netflix on a mobile device while away from home?

I'm no password sharing thief but I travel a lot and tend to stay in the same areas when traveling, just try to charge me for that and I will cancel promptly!

Also wonder how they plan to deal with VPN customers as our IPs can be all over the place.

They won't/can't...

Whatever happened to the 'honor system'? I'm always suspicious of people that insist that I'm trying to cheat them of something. I am generally very honorable, so to assume that from day one I am cheating you? I wouldn't put up with that from a GF, so why would anyone put up with it from a vendor? Yikes...

The fact that there’s been zero transparency from Netflix in how they’re determining who’s actually password sharing leads me to believe that they’re going to be pretty indiscriminate and a lot of people with legitimate use cases are going to get screwed over.
