I have got 3mbps connection and want to watch 1080p on netflix.

Due to my slow internet speed I am only getting standart definition, but I would prefer to wait for buffer instead of having SD quality. On itunes movies we can watch the quality we want, why cant i on neflix ?

Its just the way Netflix is. It adapts the quality to your Internet speed. Some people would prefer that to waiting 10 minutes or more for a full HD film to buffer.
Mine always streams in about 5 seconds at perfect quality but I do have a 60mb connection so I would expect it to!

Probably because of the wide range of players they support, including "dumb" things like Bluray players with minimal amounts of storage. You would think they would allow you to buffer on a computer...

    https://account.netflix.com/VideoQuality

or if that doesn't work got to "your account & help" then under streaming, click "manage video quality"

granted, it only sets the maximim quality, in case you have bandwidth caps, so you don't go over. but maybe yours got set low?
