Network Accessible File Server

Ok networking guys

Whats your best option for a network accessible file server? Can be a hard drive in a box from some OEM, I dont care. I just cant quite find the info online and Im wondering what you guys think. My purpose would be to back up some files remotely as I travel.

If you want to be somewhat secure while on road setup a OpenVPN server in your Server! Then use the built in VPN client built in the Network System Preferences!

Sounds like backup software is what you're looking for, and likely the best option. There are many cloud-based providers to choose from.

OK new twist - I just remembered I have a 21.5" iMac 2010 - 3.2ghz i5. Im a tech so could change out the drive no problem. If I didnt have a static IP and this would be inside a NAT table what would you guys use to access it?

dynu.net is what I use. Put an agent somewhere on the internal network or on the router if possible. I use www.dnsomatic.com to update my services with the correct IP.

Cloud solutions my be your best bet. Also, depending on your router, you may be able to share a USB connected to your router over the WAN. Finally, Back to my Mac, while it is still supported might do the trick, but it appears it is on its way out in Mojave.

As stated, cloud would be easiest.

If you want your own cloud, consider a Synology NAS. Lots of built in features, including a quick connect feature, that means you don't need a static IP, nor a DDNS acount. Super easy.

And, even easier, you could use their syncing feature: Drive.

That is is you client machine? What is acting like the VPN server at the place you are connecting too and what operating software it’s running?
