Network drive or Normal drive plus networked computer?

The title more or less states my question. I would like to add a bunch of network accessible storage to our network and I am wondering if i am better off getting a network drive or just getting a normal external drive and plugging it in this old dual 500 mhz g4 tower that use as a quasi server. So I guess I am just wondering which solution will provide me with better performance.
