Just wondering what others use for their network naming (most of us have at least 2 networked decives nowadays).

For instance my home network currently is based on Battlestar Galactica (Athena is my MBA that I am writting this on, and I have a starbuck, adama, roslyn, boxey, boomer, apollo, daggit, galactica, pegasus, and Kobol all on the group Quorum). I have many network devices and I looove the themed thing.

What do you use ? who has the cutest, the wierdest, the scariest etc...

(all for a bit of fun)

Boy, I gotta say that I'm pretty boring with the naming:
[LAST NAME] Family iMac
Living Room APE
Basement APE
Living Room ATV
MacOSX86 (Thinkpad T60 running Leopard)
Server (XP NAS box)
Garage Cam (linksys WVC54GC)
Downstairs Cam (linksys WVC54G)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I have a Monty Python and the Holy Grail theme with my network/computer stuff. Everything from the Black Knight (black iPod) to Zoot (old 256mb thumbdrive) is covered. My personal favorite is the Holy Hand Grenade (portable HD).

My computers are named from what i hear on tv shows, movies or something that comes up in conversation

XP Gaming machine - Bigrig - Came up in conversation
Macbook - Manbearpig - Heard this on South Park
PowerBook - Phobos - From Doom
Airport - Opus - Heard this on Las Vegas
Time Capsule - Sonne - Rammstein song
FreeBSD - Toolbox - Made this up

The machines on my home LAN are all named after characters from Shakespeare's play 'Cymbeline'

At work, however, we're boring - they're all just named by machine type (manufacturer, workstation or server) and a number.

My network is the only thing that is named..."The Death Crusade"

Computers just have default names: Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, iMac...simple

oh yeh I didnt mention work - we have sooo many - a few serieal killers (with TV detectives to catch em), Red Dwarf and lately its all Alcohol names :)

My network itself is called Asteroid (join if you're in the area :p)

Computers have regular names. iMac, PowerBook. Yea

My student house network is called NETGEAR and is open, far too many computers / problems with crappy netgear routers to deal with securing it. We sometimes get a Laura on the network

My home network is called "Ian Rush"

In work they're about to upgrade all the servers.
They've decided on the names of comics (book things, not people things);
Vulcan, Eagle, Victor, Commando etc.

Apparenlty the server that my branch is going to be using has been earmarked with the mnemonic Beano.

Fun topic haha, my Networks name is Ophidiophobia - The fear of snakes!

Blackbook is Black Mamba :)
iMac is Cotton Mouth
iPod Touch is well Princess Samantha, (long story short my friend, whom I converted, named her iPhone King Ricky, so I repaid the favor)
Blackberry is Viper
Old crappy HP is Sidewinder
my brothers iBook is just iBook because of all the problems it has..
and my old dell server i use as a file server is King Cobra

mine is superhero/comic/cartoon characters.....yeah

so my plan was to have the computers and devices with a character name, and the routers and stuff with a place name.

my airport is named Thundera - who can tell me what that's from without google?

computers: Flash, Eragon, Arya, Underdog, Shadeslayer (okay, so i went on an eragon rampage)

ipods - Venom, Superman, Lightspeed (iphone)

A friend of mine has named his Macs Nostromo and Sulaco. He likes to see messages like "Connecting to Nostromo". :p

Also, you could name them after TV series. House (House, Wilson, Cuddy, Thirteen...), The Office (Michael, Dwight, Pam, Jim...), HIMYM (Ted, Barney, Lily, Robin...)

Most of my computers have boring names but I did name my TiVos after the seven deadly sins.

At work, servers are named by project. I have used MASH characters for one project, Hogan's Heroes Characters for another, Simpsons characters for another, you get the point. I am now at the point where it is getting hard to come up with good TV shows/cartoons to use for naming.

At home, named after booze that comes in a can: Guinness, Strongbow, Molsons, etc

Cheers

This thread took a wierd turn today. An old colleague asked me to ssh into his server and help with a few networky issues and his names are Liver, Lungs, Heart, Kidney, Spleen, Colon and (yuk) Rectum!

thats the oddest naming theme I have found thus far.... had to share it (esp as Rectum is his NAS lol)

Oh and a small victory at work - the new multiple test system is StarTrek characters :) yey me...

Varies. I named my girlfriends network Echo, and mine was Asteroid. I likes little names like that.

Computers themselves? I just let OSX name them.

(esp as Rectum is his NAS lol)

Makes sense, what with things going in and out. :p

I don't have a network theme, but my external storage devices (except my backup drive) are named after Cowboy Bebop characters (and if I ever get a Drobo or portable HD, ships too).
512MB thumb drive: Ein
2GB thumb drive: Ed
160GB drive: Spike
320GB drive: Jet

I have another case coming in on Tuesday that will hold a 200GB from my G3 tower, which will be my new backup drive. My former backup drive, 120GB, will most likely become Faye.
