I have a MacBook pro ('09) and a new iMac. Router is a Netgear 3000. When I click on 'Network' both Macs are visible but connection always fails. Networking is a total mystery to me so can anybody help? Currently, the only thing I can get anywhere new is Dropbox - but I get a message telling me that I don't have permission to view the folder.

It would help if you explain what exactly you are trying to do. Connect both to the internet by plugging them in to the router? File share between the two networks through the router? Other?

Sorry! Yes, the same as I used to do with my PC-based systems unit recently (I'm very new to Mac) - share files between the two machines. They are both connected to the Internet through the router and there's no problem there.
