Network Profiles on OSX?

Is there a method of setting multiple network profiles (third-party of otherwise) such that one can limit the data use (disable automatic update downloads etc.) when tethered for example? Much like power profiles change when your plugged in to mains or on battery.

I'd settle for a toggle switch in status bar but ideally this should be part of preferences setup when entering the network password and remembered each time you connect.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for the info. Ive not had a chance to play around yet but (unless I missed something) it seems it's mainly about bandwidth throttling - not quite what I was after.

Ideally, I'd like to have a setup where if I connect to network X my network access is totally unrestricted over the whole OS but when I connect to network Y only Safari and Mail have network access.
