I switched my phone plan with one that offer 5G, to go along with my new 12 Pro. All is good, but have some questions and unsure if it’s specific to my provider (Telus in Canada) or a bug in 14.1. First off my settings are as follows:

Voice & Data: 5G Auto
Data mode: standard

  1. When a call comes and I’m in 5G, it goes to 3G. Previously, when I used LTE, VoLTE kept data on LTE. Is that normal for the data to drop to 3G during calls? I cannot find a Vo5G option.
  2. With smart data option (which I assume to be enabled when in 5G standard mode), should the indicator always say 5G or should it drop to LTE when saving data? Mine stays on 5G even when not downloading anything special.
  3. This may be a bug in 14.1. I noticed that the signal indicator will not update while the device is locked. For example, when coming out of an area with no signal, it will go to 1 bar once it acquires signal and stay like that no matter where I go until I unlock the device. At that point, it will immediately jump to the correct signal. Sometimes it will lock at 5 bars and not move, again until I unlock. I notice this on my car deck as well which takes the signal and battery levels via Bluetooth from my phone. Anyone else notice this? I never had this issue on my 6S+
Also, a general question, is there a way non developers can submit bugs and suggestions to Apple? (Especially if not participating in their pilot program).

Thanks!

Bumping my own thread as I’m surprised no one has responded at least to questions 1 and 2... anyone?

While I could be wrong, it's my understanding that calls do not go through 5G, only data does. So if you are on a phone call, yes it may be on LTE, 3G or whatever.
It's also my understanding that the indicator is just an indication that 5G is available to the phone. It does not necessarily mean that it is using it.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

I'm with TELUS and it stays on 5G during a call.

That's right, it goes through the LTE layer, but the phone stays connected to 5G. In fact I did speed tests and it's still 5G speeds during a call. See above

Thanks for your replies. I just tried again now and my data stayed on 5G when making a call. Perhaps my line wasn‘t fully setup yet until today.
