I've set up an ad hoc network between my old laptop and my brand new :) iMac in order to get my pictures onto iPhoto. However when I go into Finder, click on Laptop in Shared, it says connection failed.

I have been trying to work the problem out myself for a whole day now, but as a Mac newcomer I'm stumped and would be grateful of any help.

I just want my pictures off my laptop so I can say a fond farewell to Microsoft!

Presumably you are properly sharing the directory on your Windows PC. If so, it is likely failing because your user name and password is different on your Mac than on your PC.

When you go into the Finder and click on your laptop's name in Shared, it will say connection failed. But near the top of the Finder window, you should see a button that reads something like "Connect as...". Click this and then you can enter a user name and password with which to log onto the PC. Use the user name and password that you use to log into the PC, not the one you use to log into your Mac.

Try that and let us know how it goes.
