I am basing this on my experience, but I read the models before DLSD have higher memory slot failure. Sadly, but true. Also read somewhere Apple tried to hide this just like them denying the G5 leaks. Proof customer service went south.
My DLSD HR PBG415" is working right now with 2 gigs of ram. The reason I bought the 1.5ghz PBG4 was because the DVD cable went bad on it... but now not sure if I can even swap the DVD cables.

My DLSD HR PBG4 15" has a bad DVD cable with my 2007 retail Leopard disc stuck in it.

Which is the reason for the DLSD drives: to burn DVDs at a faster better rate. Back in the day, that was some upgrade.

Those crappy iBook and Powerbook "combo drives" were hilarious.

Cudos to Apple though, when I bought my first Titanium Powerbook 400mhz with a "read-only CD Rom" drive, Apple sent me a firewire CRW drive by SanDisk. Great extra. It lasted a very long time, in fact I think I still have it.
 
Excuse me for digging up this old thread.
It seems that the PowerBook I salvaged from parts has a faulty motherboard as well with the lower RAM slot not working.

I had this experience with a MBP from 2009 or 2010 where one of the RAM slots would be faulty.
There were loads of workarounds like:
  1. loosening and tightening of the screws holding the RAM slots
  2. placing credit cards between RAM slots to improve contact
  3. sacrificing a chicken and a lamb at midnight
Maybe not the latter so much. But has anyone ever found a viable workaround?

Hrm. I may try these on a MBP I have with a bad slot.

Hrm. Well, I have found some moderate success by sacrificing an “““artist””” of polka dots on the 15th of the month, at 10:01a, inside a hydroelectric generating station located in the Laurentian mountains (and the blood has to also make contact with an operating turbine), but that’s not an option available to most folks. :/

If I recall right the early MBP with the two DDR slots had the issue that if you place your palm on the palmrest too much - so much for Apples failures - some of the RAM contact PINs would break or unsolder themselves.
 
I recently had success wedging 2mm thermal padding between RAM slots on an ‘09 mini which solved an intermittent lower slot issue on that unit. Thinking this solution might also help my PBG4 15” units with the failed lower slot issues, I tried the same technique, but no dice.

It must be an issue which is not simply related to poor contact(s).

I seem to recall some Open Firmware trickery on one of these threads where it was found the module in the lower slot was visible to OF, but not registering in the OS... maybe.

Has anyone tried using a hot air rework station to heat up the affected contacts in an effort to fix the solder issue?
