Gmail was acting up on iOS 8 on my wife's iPhone but installing 8.0.2 fixed it.

Failing that, try deleting Gmail entirely and setting it up again.

Thank you. I just went through every single password starting from the first to the last and eventually it took one of them. No clue (cause I'd already done it several times)! I guess it could be the software - or maybe I'm just super tired! 😱 Thanks very much.
