NO-SPEC!, sorry it had to be said.
You wouldn't ask a surgeon to operate on you for nothing so why is it ok for someone to ask a designer to work for nothing?
The reality is that I can't buy equipment, pay my bills or for that matter buy groceries by drawing an image as payment, if a designer invests time, resources and effort they should be rewarded the same way every other profession is (e.g. with proper payment).
Hire a designer, trust me it will be worth it when you have a great looking brand for the company it will more than pay for itself with increased revenue.
Interesting site you linked to, I especially enjoyed the section on pro bono work.
Perhaps it's that is doesn't quite fit my situation, but there are some flawed examples/analogies on that site. Best of luck to the group however, as I can see why they would be upset.
That said, I don't think I fit the bill of what you're promoting. I haven't lured anyone in with promises of payment, I thought I made it clear that I was looking for a volunteer in my orginal post. Someone who enjoyed doing logo/design work- be it a pro as it appears many of you are, but more than likely I was thinking of someone who just enjoys tinkering with Photoshop or like and has fun making designs. For example, I enjoy taking underwater photographs, and while not my career, I put a lot into it. That isn't to say I would thumb my nose at someone who was looking for a few pictures to put on their website. I'm no pro, and understand such. I just enjoy taking photos and sharing them.
And to your question of "Why is it ok for someone to ask a designer to work for nothing?" Well... why isn't it ok to seek a volunteer (apparently not on this forum of course) to do some work? As long as they know the terms ahead of time- which seems to be a mistake made (Just say No! aritcle) on the site you sent me to. (Of course I'd have hoped a professional designer would have figured out to get a contract, especially the second time around.)
I suppose my target audience was slightly different that what I got in this forum. And as mentioned before, sorry for posting this here, I wasn't aware it wasn't allowed.
In any event, thanks to those who have contacted me, it is greatly appreciated.
