I wouldn't mind, except for the fact that Apple hasn't supported the AptX bluetooth codecs in its iPhones and iPads before, and I presume they haven't in the latest models, even though they do have Bluetooth 5.0. If Apple isn't willing to support AptXD, then the least they could do is offer something better that wireless headphone manufacturers other than Beats can get behind.

Classic case of 'deal breaker' for me, right there. Sad. :(

Good. No one wants a headphone jack in 2018. The higher prices and no headphone jack represent key features that all apple fans will love!

In fact, considering that this is essentially an Iphone XS plus max, where the screen size is 2x bigger than the iphone XS plus max, apple should have priced it at exactly twice the price! $2198!!

This Ipad is severely underpriced!!
You’re living in a bubble if you honestly believe that. Unfortunately everyone in Cupertino are in the same bubble too. People have a wide variety of use cases and needs. I’m a Pro and rarely get through a week without needing an analog 1/8” jack at some point. A dongle is not sufficient in a variety of situations

Between this and the lack of Touch ID, I'm going to pass on this round.

The lack of a headphone jack on my iPhone X drives me crazy. Almost enough to switch to something else.

Wait until you realize that you won't have one single native set of headphones you can use between your iPhone, iPad and Mac without a dongle!!

Use Bluetooth headphones.

And yeah, removing the headphone jack just encourages future soundboards to support Bluetooth.

Unless all devices develop ultra-low latency in an open standard, Bluetooth will never be an acceptable solution for gaming, nor audio work.

You always had to use a dongle for audio stuff with the iPad. Now with usb c you have more options. You can use a audio interface now

But what happens when my Mic is plugged into the USB-C jack, and I need to monitor it? And what if I'm doing a lot of recording and need to plug in power as well? Guess I'm going to have to plug in a lot of dongles!

The headphone jack is 3.5mm in diameter. Considering the jack alone, and not the components needed to go around it, that leaves 1.2mm on either side of the jack in a 5.9mm-deep tablet.

They still need to fit the display glass and chassis in those 2.4 millimeters.

There's also no way it could go under the display in a tablet that thin.

So, no, there's not "enough room" for a headphone jack in there.

Lots of ways they could fit that in there if they wanted to. One would have been a corner socket, where the bezel actually is, which wouldn't have been much different than than the old iPad jack geometry -- simply lay the jack in underneath on the X or Y axis.

Whooosh!!!

In fairness it says it all that I thought Pelea's post was serious on first glance... because people genuinely make similar arguments here so often! :D

(though I'm still not sure tbh...!)

I don't really mind that they got rid of it.. but it's a shame it doesn't have 2 usb-c ports to make up for it.

Two usbc ports would have been acceptable. With one, you have to choose between charging; or wired headphones; or charging and Bluetooth lossy audio with latency and another battery to worry about keeping charged.

Not that you want a dongle but they do make one already that will allow you to extend the port and add a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Thanks for the link, and sometimes that’s what I might have to resort to if I want to simultaneously charge and listen at the same time.

Asking legitimately and purely curious, but why do you do that? Other than if the battery is dying, I can't ever recall a moment where I listen with headphones AND charge at the same time.

It’s a good question you’re asking. I only listen/charge while I’m stationary at a desk or sitting in the recliner/sofa, Mainly for Music awhile multitasking with other media , it’s just to prevent the battery drainage, more or less the force of habit that I always have charged while the iPad is in use.

I hope you’re being sarcastic otherwise you’re a clown

I agree. The MacBooks have two USB-C ports, why not the iPad which is being positioned to compete with it.

By the way, where are the Apple USB-C headphones, which at least could finally be used with a Lightning to USB-C adapter across all Apple devices?

I have to thank Apple for making decisions so much easier. No headphone jack = no purchase.

Ditto re the Mini - soldered storage = no purchase.

Really rather sad what Apple has become under Timmy.....

#JustAnotherFacelessCorporation

I use different proffesional headsets, and need to connect the ipad to mixconsoles all the time. I have an iphone x, with the dongle, that i use everyday - it works ok, but if i forget the dongle at home i am totally lost. If apple remove the headsetport on all their devices i am done buying any more of their pads (and phones). That little port is needed for my work...

They took away Touch ID and NOW the headphone jack?!

Sticking with the previous gen iPad Pro until they come to their senses. There was especially no need to get rid of the jack, especially when the Pro isn't as waterproof.

I am glad the headphone jack is removed, I just wish they had done it with the MBP as well. It's not optical anymore, so no point to it being there.

Or they could have added a lightening port for charging ( same as my iPhone)and could have used it for headphones as well.

I'd be happy with a dongle.

So Apple has now basically created a situation where anyone who wants to use a pair of wired headphones with an iPhone, an iPadPro and a Mac, must carry two different 3.5mm dongle/adapters, and a pair of headphones with 140 year old connector technology.

That said, if one were to use USB-C headphones, is there an adapter that allows USB-C headphones to work over Lightning for the iPhone? Although it cuts Apple headphones out of the picture since they don't make USB-C headphones, that would be one way to only carry one pair of headphones and one dongle.

No official dongle for USB- C to lightening but the opposite is there(checked apple.com). So technically lightening headphones can work with iPad with a dongle.

No, there is no female Lighting to USB-C adapter that I'm aware of, and no female to female adapter, other then for the Apple Pencil, which works only for the Apple Pencil.

So basically after spending $800 for the cheapest iPad Pro plus another $129 for a pencil and another $100 for the keyboard. I have to spend another $159 for those AirPods or figure out male female dongles. Please kill me. I don’t want to go through this.

Or just switch back to your 3.5mm headphones with the 140 year old technology (thanks Phil!), and buy a $9 USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, which probably only works on the iPad Pro.

I realise that Apple is stubborn and will not alter the decision. Having said that, I fail to understand the logic, the lack of commitment to function.

1. Now, if you buy the iPad and are on the road, you need a lighting and an usb-c if you carry iPhone and iPad.
2. iPad battery lasts much longer than any bluetooth headphone, so, I now have to carry a headphone charger and wait while my headphones recharge . . .
3. It is getting time to upgrade the kids' iPads. On the plane, for example, they often share the same device to watch movies together.
4. If I do want to charge the iPad and use wired......?
5. I could continue....

Yes, I know there are dongles. For example, I can purchase the $9 dongle, and attach the headphone splitter. I can buy a separate dongle, I assume that lets me charge and listen. I can buy a dongle . . . . Assuming that no dongles are left anywhere or lost in transit, offices, hotel rooms, etc.

It seems to me that function has become much more complicated.
