There's the rub :) I wonder if they'll even bother with a 13" and just jump to 14" (since the 12" is so close in size). Whatever the next step up will be I expect a $100 increase over the 12" base.
Macbook Pro 13" starts at €1449 and 15" at €2299 :/ Yes, base 15" is better spec'ced than 13", but that's the sort of increase I expect.

Seems as if Apple can't upgrade the MBA because it would definitely cannibalize the rMB.

If they released a MBA with 16GB option, Skylake Proccessors and Retina screen, who would buy the MacBook?

Considering such a device would need to be heavier to maintain battery life, and more expensive to maintain margins, I would probably still pick the MacBook.

That is why it probably will only get a small update and no Retina screen.

If it mainly comes down to battery size then it's a disappointment that Apple didn't fit a retina screen into the current Airs by now.

They did!

No company in their right mind would have just dropped a new screen in their old model. They would update everything to optimize the package. In the case of the 12" it got most of the latest engineered stuff (with the exception of camera), so bassically it's a 11" MBA that grew thinner, lighter, better screen and abou the same battery power.

BTW I think I also mentioned that while battery technology is a driving force for time so also is the rest of the package, CPU, screen amp requirements, the OS and so on...
