The BIGGEST problem I have is the heat and the fan noise. It wouldn't burn my lap but it is so hot that the fan is running 24/7! Even when I am only surfing the web the fan is on and makes a considerable noise. The only time the fan is off is right after startup for about 5 minutes then it kicks in and goes and goes and goes. It's driving me nuts. After having an almost completely silent computer with the iBook this is just annoying.

Make sure the processor performance in sys prefs -> options is set to AUTOMATIC. My 15" pb had the fan on constantly because I had it set on highest. It worked for me.

Yeah it is. As said earlier I think I've narrowed it down to it being due to the power cord plugged in. I have not yet ascertained why this is the reason but I guess Apple will.

my revc 12" powerbook had a dead pixel on arrival...

also it only heats up when playing games when set on highest performance...

and as someone else mentioned the fan is not really ever used if you set the performance to automatic...

Diatribe...

Post here with what you find out from apple because I have the exact same problem. Rev C 12"...fan always comes on about 5 minutes after I start up if I am running off of AC.

Well, my 1.33 PB 12" arrived wednesday - so far it's ripped a stack of CDs and last night I used it to ssh in and fix a server problem (guess what my day job is), so all I have is a first impression so far. Having said that, the first impression is very nice. It's got one pixel that may or may not be stuck, but it's in the upper left corner where the menu bar is so it's well hidden - I've noticed it a couple of times, but can't normally see it. If it turns out to be consistent I'll look into what to do about it.

It needs more memory, but I'll be upgrading that soon. Using it at my desk with a 19" monitor rocks - I like the way apple handled the screen switching options. The laptop screen is bright enough that I often have it turned down, which is amazing. The CD drive's a little loud, but on par with the Thinkpads I've worked with. I haven't had problems with the fan (I haven't even noticed it), but it hasn't been worked hard at all yet, either.

I have 2 dead pixels, and also have the constant on fan issue. I've called apple about the pixels- they said someone had to "look" at the screen to determine if my dead pixels warranted replacement. I never thought to call apple about the fan issue.

the 3rd speaker is a midrange speaker that is behind the hinge that makes your screen move back and forth.

they aren't LOUD laptop speakers, but the EQ is better than any others i've heard

Just how much better is the AE range/reception on an iBook as opposed to a PowerBook? I always hear about it being so bad

I used the Rev C for about an hour today with the same amount of RAM I have in my Rev B and it doesnt seem THAT much faster at all,the screen is a little brighter and it isnt much cooler than my Rev B. Unreal 2004 still doesnt run very well so im not that jelous anymore:D. Im waiting for the Rev D,definately NOT worth upgrading from a Rev B.

i was told that they wouldnt do anything if there were less than 5 dead pixels... seeing as i had only one i just left it at that.. post an update if you do get someone to look at it...

and as for AE reception.. well my girlfriend has a 12" ibook and i dont notice any difference in the reception between my laptop and hers...

i was all set to buy a 12" for college, but seeing the fan problems in the original post gave me a scare. good to know that its not common.
coupla quick questions:
anyone use this in college? would you recommend it?
also, how much ram would you recommend?

i use mine at university.. is that the same as college? we dont have such a thing here in australia.. anyway its great and id highly recommend it... all the pc users are jealous of my beautiful machine... my only complaint is i wish it was lighter.. not that its heavy but carrying around 2.5kg all day gets tiresome (or maybe im just weak)
i use 512mb ram and it seems fine..

I will do that. Good to know that I am not the only one having this problem. Although I am sorry for you.

It is not that much worse. Worse but not bad enough to pose a problem. Could be better, could be worse.

I use it all the time in class. To take notes, look up stuff, etc. Portability wise you cannot beat it for college. Especially if you don't have a lot of space on your "tray" (sometimes it isn't much larger than one :D )
I'd go for 768MB RAM if you just do the regular stuff like web surfing, iTunes, etc. I do photoshop work too but not a whole lot. If you do a lot of video editing or music related work I'd go for 1.25GB RAM.

My 12" PB is perfect. I got the 1GHz version with the entire ram.

The fan doesn't make that much noice, I can hardly feel it actually, it is not an issue for me and my computer is on for the entire month! I mean, is on 24/7 for real.

The only problem is the "state of the crap" hard drive, Apple sure got cheap on those, they are way too slow and I loose all the performance there.

The rest... no dead pixels, no scratches... I do not know what else. I have a wish list like PCMCI port and lighted keyboard but.... what ever.

Hey thanks for the info. To answer your question, around here we use college and university almost interchangably. Technically, I am going to University of Massachusetts Amherst, as a History major so I'm in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts... hope that answers the question.
