Does it really matter if it’s compatible or not? Even the 16” gets crazy loud when connected to an external monitor. Can’t imagine how loud the 13” will get.
I’m extremely happy getting an iMac. No fan noise anymore.

question: does anyone know if new macbooks are compatible with the old 30" apple displays?

Sure they are! Here’s the adapter you’ll need.

Those 30” used a dual-link DVI connection, so as long as you have a DVI adapter which supports that protocol, you should be fine.

That’s not my point, the low end MacBook Pro is priced far to high for the specs.
How so? The base Dell has a 1080p screen. Apart from the ability to drive a 6K display, the CPU and GPU differences aren’t that great between the 8th and 10th generations. Ice Lake is more efficient but runs at lower clock speeds. Neither iGPUs are great for gaming. Both are adequate for video editing, etc.

While at the same price, Dell sells the XPS 13 with 10th gen for $100 less and WiFi 6 and has an internal 4K option.
Wi-Fi 6 is debatable...who cares about 4K in a 13" laptop? It's a resource and battery suck to tick a box on a spec sheet and shut up the PCMR users.

Good luck finding Apple's 30" DualLink DVI box you need to get it to work and then you'll need a Thunderbolt 2 Dock hooked up to the MacBook Pro via a TB2<-->TB3 adapter. Ask me how I know.

I noticed that the LG 4K and 5K displays are both on backorder (listing 8 week delivery) so wondering if Apple is going to release additional lower end displays or LG is going to do a refresh themselves.

It would be amazing if Apple would release a more budget friendly consumer version of this monitor (with stand included 😂) in the near future.

Maybe 27" 5K, similar housing, ~$1500??

It seems plausible to be getting a panel refresh soon.

Eithar that or supply chain issues

Apple's new 13-inch MacBook Pro models with four Thunderbolt 3 ports are compatible with its Pro Display XDR at full 6K resolution, according to updated tech specs for the display. The base model with two Thunderbolt 3 ports remains incapable of this.

Pro-Display-XDR-Blue.jpg

Apple's Pro Display XDR is a 32-inch 6K monitor with a P3 wide color gamut and true 10-bit color support, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a super-wide, off-axis viewing angle. It is also compatible with the 2018 and later 15-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, 2019 Mac Pro, 2019 iMac, and 2020 MacBook Air.

Apple updated the 13-inch MacBook Pro earlier today with a more reliable Magic Keyboard, up to 10th-generation Intel Core processor options, up to 32GB of RAM, up to 4TB of SSD storage, and more. Read our announcement coverage for more details.

That makes a beautiful iMac.

Could it be...?

At WWDC? (Haiku over.)

Azrael.

Can the thunderbolt ports on the left be used or will it cause the MacBook to overheat and eat CPU?

And are the ports on the right still reduced bandwidth?

Since the lower-spec configs are still on 8th Generation CPUs, I expect Apple did not make any updates to the systemboard which means they are still on the older Alpine Ridge TB3 controller which cannot drive a Pro XDR Display at 6K (only 5K) due to only supporting DisplayPort 1.2.

The higher-end models that received 10th Generation CPUs likely have a new systemboard and the TB3 controller would have been updated to the newer Titan Ridge which can drive a Pro XDR Display at 6K thanks to supporting DisplayPort 1.4.

thanks so much! that's awesome. i use it with my pre usb-c macbook air, and a friend of mine said that his old display wouldn't work with the new macbook(this was about a year ago). i guess he just didn't do his research)
this was one of the reasons i've been reluctant to upgrade. well, this and catalina... :)

Saw the image and got all excited thinking Apple released a new display to go along with the new MacBooks. (Sigh)... maybe next time.

They are back ordered because of quarantine. It’s the working from home thing. No updates are expected at all.

But if you’re a pro, would you really be using a 13” laptop with a $6k display (if you wanted/needed the stand)?

Hopefully one day Apple will bring back a consumer priced display... We use them too!

This is honestly ridiculous. Who on God's green earth is going to do heavy editing on this machine enough that they need to drive a 6k display?

The reason is the Coronavirus that caused tens of millions of people to work From home. All Higher end displays are either on back order or are available at jacked up prices. This started during the first and second weeks of March, when the web cams also disappeared and have been available mostly on eBay for 3x the MSRP.

LG UltraFine displays were refreshed in August 2019. There is no refresh coming. Perhaps Apple will release their own 4K and 5K displays during WWDC, but LG is not refreshing their 4K or 5K UltraFine displays this year.

I know 99% of this thread is NASA's commitment to build rocket boosters from apples fan system but I do have a question..

How well would the new processor hypothetically render 4k video. 32 gigs ram and whatever HD it allows?

I have a 2017 27" 5k imac with the higher end processor and 48 gigs of total ram. It does a *decent job. Would like to not have to sit in front of the big screen and do it from my couch.
