Sitting with the MBP on my lap now in Photoshop and Illustrator and I'm quite happy with an i7, cooler temps, and longer battery life.

That’s what I needed to hear! So illustrator and photoshop runs well on the 13” with no eGPU?

I work with pretty simple vector designs for web and print materials but I tend to have many different vectors open at the same time, and maybe a large PSD too if I’m doing a mock-up etc.

Also, what eGPU do you use?? Need to look into those.

Different take - don’t buy a 16” if you want portability. Everyone talks about buying the 16” because if you spend past X amount, then you should buy it.

No.

There is also value in your priorities, time, comfort, and overall user experience. You can live with not getting the specs to an exact science, but the size will get to you, then you’ll be looking to get something smaller.

There are too many here on MR that look only at the entry-level MBP like the high-end shouldn’t even exist. It really is a viable option for people who travel a lot and/or work is various locations on a given day or week.

Get the 13” and spec it to your needs. If it cost as much as a 16”, so what? You’ll never be able to resize that 16” to a 13”. And why waste money later? Spend the money now and be done until you next need another 13”.

Thanks, this really makes sense. I feel like everyone thinks the entry level MBP is sh*t and if you upgrade to the 10th gen, you better upgrade to the 16”. Coming from a 2010 MBP everything is faster. I only want it to work well for my workflow.

OKAY: so I decided to go with the 13”. Is this one enough for Adobe and some 4K video editing? It doesn’t have to be the fastest computer in the world and I will buy an external screen if I need it for editing:

10th gen i5 or i7?
(Is it really much of a difference?)
32GB RAM
1TB SSD

That's part of the reason I went with the 13 inch. I'm 50/50 connected to my Thunderbolt dock and eGPU, and out working away from home (at least I was pre-quarantine). I needed power to go, and additional power to plug into when I need it.

I get a lot of real work done on my 13 inch. Spent 2 days working on a large complicated project in After Effects and Premiere - had plenty of power, speed and compute for encoding when connected to my eGPU. Sitting with the MBP on my lap now in Photoshop and Illustrator and I'm quite happy with an i7, cooler temps, and longer battery life.

Did you get 16GB or 32GB of ram?

Portability is important to me too. I do some intermediate work with the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) along with the occasional Final Cut Pro, and am wondering if 16GB will be sufficient. 🤔

Here’s what I ordered:
2.3GHz quad-core 10th gen i7
13” MBP 2020
1TB HD
16GB Ram

I went with i7/16/512. I have a Sonnet Breakaway 550 with an AMD 5600XT.

I'm very happy with the performance of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and After Effects, especially with the eGPU. However, I've noticed that Illustrator isn't as optimized as I thought it would be for GPU acceleration. 16GB of RAM has been plenty for me - I was concerned when I went into After Effects and worked on one of my more intensive projects, but my RAM usage was well within the 16GB and I didn't have any issues - and that was while I had Premiere open in the background at the same time - going back and forth between the two apps open at the same time. Frequently I'm working with a composition in After Effects, rendering it out, inserting it into Premiere in a sequence and applying effects, etc, and reviewing that in my timeline. The added eGPU at my desk gives me the horsepower I need on the GPU side. When I'm portable, Photoshop and Illustrator run speedy and smooth for the most part.

Hi,

I’m planning on buying a new MBP. I prefer the 13” over the 16” because of the size and portability. I’m a graphic designer, and I use Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign a lot. I’m also doing some 4K editing in FCP.

I don’t know a lot about specs. I want a laptop that works fast with Adobe and does 4K rendering well enough to not have to do it overnight.

I’m thinking about buying this one:
The new 13” with 10th gen 2,3GHz i7, 32GB and 1TB.

Is this overkill? Can I save money by downgrading to i5 or 16GB, or do I need those specs for my needs?

Thanks in advance.
That is the same exact config I preordered!

13” 10th gen i7 2.3 Ghz
32GB RAM
1 TB SSD

Similarly I use Adobe CC and am looking to dabble in FCP and edit 4K footage.

I spent days doing research on here and reddit, debating and deciding between the 13” and 16” along with the various options but ultimately decided that I favor the portable form factor. Otherwise I would be less likely to take it out of the house. Plus I already have extra screen real estate with my 27” LG monitor.

I would buy the specced out 2020 13” with confidence. :)

Interesting stuff here. For me it’s the complete opposite. The 13” make much more sense as a home machine as the screen size at home is not really an issue as I always connect it to a much bigger external display.
where the 16” really shines for me is when is when working on the machine without an external display, and thats usually on the road etc.
Coming from a bulky heavy gaming laptop the 16” feels tiny and light for me while having the screen size to get serious work done. The 13” screen is so small it feels really cramped and restricted.

So adobe CC will run pretty smooth on the tenth gen 13”? Or will it struggle when using photoshop and indesign?
