Is the preview free and if so why can you acquire a copy. Also, does it need to install on an existing version of windows or is it a stand alone?

You can sign up for the preview and they offer an .iso that is a full install. Upon release later this summer, the preview will expire. If you search Windows 10 Technical Preview, it will direct you to the site.

I've tried installing it but even though I have my partitions set up as Grid it thinks it's Master Boot and will not let me install. I even repartitioned but there was no change and I can't install

You have to use gdisk to remove the hybrid MBR and revert the whole thing back into a protective MBR so that the FAT32 partition is GPT to both OS X and Windows.

Disk Utility formats FAT32 in such a way that OS X sees it as GPT and Windows sees it as MBR. So use gdisk (free CLI) to fix it.
