Hi all. I’ve just received my new MBP 16” with 5500 8Gb graphics card upgrade. Except when I went to the ‘about this mac’ box, it is staying there is only a “Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536Mb” installed.
I imagine this is just a bug, and I did a google search which displayed 3 year old references that all basically said ‘update to latest Sierra update’. Obv this machine is on Catalina (10.15.1).
Anyway to rectify this ongoing bug?
Thanks in advance

Information about discrete graphics can be found here: About This Mac > System Report > Graphics/Displays

The only time the first menu in ABOUT THIS MAC will show the dGPU is when it's actively engaged (when it will show both Intel and the dGPU) OR when automatic graphics switching is disabled in energy saver preferences.

Sorry guys what does that mean? That the upgraded GPU only works when it’s going to be needed, otherwise the standard GPU will be used?

System Preferences > Energy Saver
Choose your own path.
DISABLE automatic graphics switching to basically force the 5500M to be used all the time.
ENABLE automatic graphics switching for the OS to handle swapping between Intel and 5500M as needed. This yields the best battery life.

I thought the system only had the 5500m graphics - didn't realise it had the Intel UHD Graphics 630 as well as the 5500m!

All of the 16" system have 2 GPUs. On is the built in Intel 630 GPU that is part of the CPU package. The second is a discrete GPU chip(dGPU), the 5300m or 5500m. When you upgrade your GPU you are upgrading the dGPU.

I almost went back into the Apple Store when I saw the Intel Graphics info instead of Radeon ... Glad I read this forum first and checked in "About This Mac -> System Report -> Graphics/Display" And thanks for the tips on turning on the Radeon full time instead of switching between Intel and Redeon as needed ... Makes sens to do it that way since it does save batter life .... but when I'm plugged in I'll want to use the Radeon all the time.
