Are you sure that you have hidef display? I know of standard 1600x1050 w 2.4GHZ being offered for what you say. Mine is 2.6GHz with hidef display. It's what they sell curently for $3000 with 4gigs and 320HD. Mine was so good in price because of 'only' 200HD (although fast one) and 2gig memory. Apparently some forgotten stock from summer before the refresh.

I am absolutely positive because the screen reports and displays 1920x1200 not to mention the Apple box it was packaged in listed that resolution as the standard.
It is also the newest Penryn 6MB cache processor with 17 inch matte LED backlit screen.
My cpu is 2.6GHZ as well and 512MB of VRAM.
I got quite the deal, especially since it has 3 year Applecare.

it was listed for $2350 and I made an offer and got lucky.
I've been using ebay for over 10 years and never been burned. Thought this would be the time it would happen.
Machine was shipped OVERNIGHT to me (note: before my payment even cleared to the seller!) and what I got was a brand new MacBook Pro 17" etc just as described.
There was no difference from buying it via Mac Mall or anywhere else.
Just got a smoking deal on it with Apple Care (verified it online with the serial number)
Machine registered fine with Apple (I called them and verified that too!)

I think that's over the paypal protection limit. Hopefully, you bought it with a credit card to cover you.
$2000 is the paypal limit (based on specific criteria), which is what I paid for the new machine.
Yes I used a credit card, and I am not worried now as I have been using the machine for over a month. 😉

I've been dying for the 17". I waited from May until October to get one as I don't want out-dated technology, and my heart sank when it did not release.
I am crossing my fingers for Macworld because being a college student without a computer is some tough business 🙁
I also hope they bump processor speed to 3.0 GHz due to more space for cooling?? *shrugs

Not all are faulty. In fact those that are manufactured after Oct 08 are not the infected batches. Although it's still too early to tell. However, Apple's has extended the warranty on this gpu for another year.
I would love to wait for Macword 09, but I have a strong feeling the updated 17" will not have the matte screen I'm looking for, which is why I intend to buy the current 17" (with hi-res, 4GB ram as standard). I have enough confidence in Apple and Nvidia to have fixed the current 8600 gpu batches by now. It's a risk to buy with what's known, but I think my chance of receiving a revised gpu is high at this moment.

So would they release the 17" then turn around and refresh the portable line with a new processor, etc. If they did that the 17" would only have a shelf time of around 3 months. That doesn't seem plausible to me. At the same time I don't seem them waiting that long to release it either.

The reason that was stated that the 17" was not updated was because of a display and disc drive issue I thought.

That's what I thought. So what is the actual name or material difference in the pre-2006 matte screens of the iBooks/PowerBooks, the glossier screens of the 2006 MacBooks/MacBook Pros and now these glass ones. I'm not sure what the standard LCD screen material is called, but were the next ones glossy with like a plastic shield? And the new ones glass-covered of course. Is it just the covering or surface that changed? I realize if I really need to know I can research on the Web, but if anyone here knows off the top of their head I'd be interested.
This is where by knowlage ends.
But now I'm guessing that they have changed the material in the new MBP. Because the screen seems to be a little richer than my early 08 MBP. Maybe it's the glass? I don't know.
But that would be a interesting read.

In 2006 (when Apple switched to Intel processors) the complete matte "skin" of all the previous iBooks & PowerBooks (where you could make a physical ripple by touching it) gave way to a glossier, harder plastic-like shield, that you could make a noise with when tapping your fingernail, yet still could make a temporary ripple or "dent" in the display when touched. They were considered "glossy" or at least glossier. But now these are glass where they are completely hard (no alteration or effect on screen when touched), and are referred to as "high gloss".
I just wanted to know what the difference was in the degrees of gloss and what they technically called the 3 different materials I know of. I never owned an Intel notebook until now with my new MacBook Pro.

Any way to confirm if a model was produced after Oct 08? If I could feel more confident about the GPU, I'd happily settle for the current version.
I live in Japan, but I plan to buy from the U.S. (SO much cheaper!). This also affects my decision, cuz I will be in the states for Xmas, but will be back in Japan before any January "announcement" is or isn't made.
I'll have to look into the details on how living overseas affects Applecare. That's crucial, given all the gloomy GPU talk for the current 17". 🙁
