All you Mac hockey puck mini fans been complaining for years! Now your still complaining! Be happy they didn't kill your cheap machine! GO MAC PRO and Skylake!!!!!!

Yea...your right...I repent.

I will suck it up and get one. Can't afford a "real" Pro...

Most any consumer that tries to solder RAM into their Mini will break it and render it inoperable. Some people can't even install user replaceable RAM without breaking something.

Those with the proper equipment and experience can do it, but that's virtually no one.

Now I can't wait to try, who want more Ram, I'm ready to solder it in.

Anyone?

I think this is a pretty good move but I would also prefer that since Apple is soldering the RAM, that they should make all models come with 16GB.

The Mac mini is basically the desktop version of the MBA anyway, so why wouldn't they use the same techniques used in the MBA to save space?

You do realize the MBA tops out at 8GB, right?

Umm does anyone else not know what Apple is doing? Anybody that's clever should already know what they're doing:

1) 2014 Mac Mini was a last minute upgrade.

Think about it. Do you guys really think that Apple spend 2 years to just solder in the RAM and slightly change the internals? The design is the exact same one. Apple knows people will still buy it so they are "milking" this Mac Mini as much as possible to gain profit.

2) The 2014 Mac Mini will be the last "classic" model of the next Generation Mac Mini.

Makes sense. I'm highly certain that inside those Apple labs there is a new form factor of the Mac Mini. This is why they decided to skip last year's upgrade. Of course this model will most likely start at $999. Anybody get the pattern here?

3) Apple wanted Broadwell

Of course every new design needs smaller chips, hence the emphasis on "thin, light, blah blah blah". Broadwell promises this so next year will be interesting.

4) Something in between a Mac Mini and a Mac Pro

People are dying for this one. That's why I mentioned the $999 price point. Apple can go two ways. Either they make a new next generation Mac Mini or they decide to cut the Mac Pro in half. Mac Pro mini anyone lol?

5) Apple is brilliant

Apple knows people will buy the 2014 Mac Mini even with soldered ram. If a new form factor comes out, they will jump to it. This is how they "exite" people. By this time the 2014 Mac Mini should be completely milked. As Steve Jobs says, "It's brilliant!".

If people stop buying the Mini, maybe Apple would get the message. But people won't, so it will only get worse.

This is how we look at it but the way Apple thinks is if the product is not selling, then there is no market and let's stop updating it...keep selling it the way it currently is for several more years and then discontinue the product. iPod Classic?

What a stupid move by Apple.

I'm so loving my current 2012 Mac Mini to a point that I was thinking to buy the new 2014 version so I would use it for my music production after upgrading its memory to its maximum capacity, not any more I'm afraid!!!

um, yes I do realize that but that wasn't the point of my post. The point was that I am fine with Apple soldering the RAM into the machine. Also, if you compare the specs of the basic machines, they're using the same CPU, same memory, same GPU...

Is this sarcasm??

You're assuming that there's a next generation Mac mini in the works. For all you know, this might be the end of the line for the Mac mini.

There is a quad core i7 option

Am I really the only one who bothered to go to store.apple.com and click on the high-end (or mid-end) model and see what happened?

They both can be upgraded to a quad-core i7.

Edit: Whoops. Let this be a testament to my not-paying-attentionitude. They're dual-core i7s, not quad. Wonder if the processor is soldered in?

So we have 28 pages already on this topic....I know this has been a concern for a long time whether Apple was going to do this on the new Mac Mini...I wonder how many sales will be lost to this change?

No, they can't. Go back and read it again. It says dual core, not quad core.

It would be awesome if the next gen Mac mini was the same size as the Airport express (or slightly larger) and also came in white. That would be awesome. OR....maybe the same size/shape as the Wireless extreme base station. Very cool. And yes, this is a serious response! It would be awesome to be able to mount an Apple Express sized Computer behind your display.

If you NEED 16gb of RAM, you shouldn't be looking at this machine anyways.

Just because someone needs a lot of RAM doesn't mean he also needs an eight-core Xeon powerhouse that cost more than a used car.

When you have multiple browsers with multiple tabs each, dozens of Photoshop files opened, three instances of VMWare to test in Internet Explorer, you need lots of RAM. Computing power, not so much.

I don't care about soldered or not soldered as much as, oh crap, my memory went bad or my hard drive went bad. Now I have to buy a new hard drive, memory, and logic board because its one piece.

If Apple is going to pull this ****, then they need to make a 5 year Apple Care option as well as their typical three year.

You must be looking at a different Apple Store to the rest of us. :p

Good design also means using less materials, and it's obvious that soldered RAM would not need the plastic socket. If only 10% of Mac mini owners upgrade their RAM, then that's 90% of wasted sockets out in the world.

I, too, wish Apple would design their systems to be more user serviceable, but there also needs to be a realistic balance stricken. Apple is probably well aware of roughly how many Mac mini owners would perform a RAM upgrade. With the Mac minis coming with 8GB out of the box, that will be more than enough for the vast majority of users, and for those that need more, they still have the OPTION of getting double that amount at time of purchase.

Pressure on Apple is always a good thing, so I'm glad to see this issue discussed in such depth. Let's hope that Apple is paying attention.

I'd agree with you, if it wasn't for Apple's price gouging.

I will say that it's nice they have finally offered 1TB SSD Flash Storage but wow they want $800.00 extra for that? Isn't that priced a little high?

You're assuming that there's a next generation Mac mini in the works. For all you know, this might be the end of the line for the Mac mini.

Then if you don't want the Mac Mini to die, then "buy" it. It's that simple. That's Apple logic for you.
