1. Apple introduces new (crahp) MINI

2. the "OLD" model goes WAY UP IN PRICE

welcome to the NEW INSANE.

INSANE.....
.....1. NEW MODEL COMPUTER COMES OUT.........2. OLD MODEL GOES UP IN PRICE

So a random guy who hasn't even been inside the mini knows all? Seriously MacRumors? This is news?

I'll wait for iFixit for the truth, either way.

I can think of at least two reasons, but they're pretty weak:
1) shorter PCB traces (in a sense, using the same PCB assembly line of the iMac or Macbook Pro) and less parts
2) LPDDR3 (which is listed) where as the previous MacMini's were just DDR3, for lower energy use

In the case of LPDDR3, you can't buy SODIMM's, none exist. It's not DDR3L, and the standby power is 1/8th of DDR3L.

Take note of the timeline near the end. 14/15 LPDDR4

Top priority of my desktop plugged into the wall and sitting on the desk is a miniscule improvement in power use and making the box as thing as possible.

It isn't any less. The mid model is more expensive.

Sort of sucks that one went up, but to lessen the pain, we'd all have to get it with the usual $10 off at Best Buy and use the 10% off USPS moving coupon to bring the price back down.

So if I do buy one, it won't be at an Apple Store.

If it's because normal RAM takes too much space because of its connectors, why not create a new one, just like they did at the beginning for the SSD drives in Retina MacBooks?
It's becoming annoying to see everything being soldered and not replaceable!

What are you talking about? there use to be a giant optical drive in there!!! Apple did it solely to make more money!!!

And then we would have to buy Apple-made RAM with the proprietary connectors...until a third-party makes it, but then Apple would probably find a way to make non-Apple RAM not work, like by adding a special chip to the sticks or something.

What a joke... There's absolutely zero reason to do this...

Just taking advantage of clueless apple fans as always...

How does it work again? The new one comes out and then...?

All three Mac mini models can be upgraded to a maximum of 16GB of RAM, with the upgrade priced at $300 for the base model and $200 for the mid and high-end models.

This really puzzles me and surely over the top.. isn't the 16GB the same RAM??? Why the extra $100 from base model!!

Well that sucks. I was hoping to buy the new Mac Mini and sell my old iMac, but 16 gigs of RAM is barely enough for what I do now. If they'd updated the Mac Pro as well, I'd be tempted, but I'm not gonna shell out top dollar for a year old machine. Despite Apple's declaration of their best product pipeline this year, they're a bit disappointing. :/

Edit: Seems to me that Apple no longer recognizes the market of those who use a computer connected to an hdtv for both work and play.

what mission critical apps are you running that 16GB of RAM is barely enough? I have 8GB RAM and I run multiple VMs (connecting to company's VPN etc) and do heavy photoshopping as well and yet, I find 8GB is more than sufficient. just curious.

If this is true then all the Mac Mini fans around the world including me are justifiable pissed off. I'm sticking with my 2012 Mac Mini and upgrade its RAM to its max soon as I can and start saving for a new iMac (because that's what they want, no?)

I was excited about a product refresh but there goes that... At least my refurbished quad core mini just went up in value :p

Mac Mini Ram

I don't believe them. If you look under <learn more> in the configure page for the mac mini you DO NOT FIND the following paragraph:

"Note that MacBook Pro with Retina display comes with 8GB of memory built into the computer. If you think you may need more memory in the future, it is important to upgrade at the time of purchase, because memory cannot be upgraded later in this model."

This leads me to believe that the ram IS UPGRADEABLE.

"limited to 16GB of RAM"

This world is getting out of control. The problem with providing massive specs to solve performance problems is that the performance problems just get worse because developers are lazy, so more specs are needed, and it's an endless cycle. The pressure needs to be put onto software developers to create lean, mean software, not bloated messes like what Adobe puts out. Don't blame Apple here.. 16GB is a LOT of RAM to be working with. Contact your favourite software houses and demand that they ensure they are using RAM as efficiently as possible. Make noise in that arena.

I totally agree that 16GB is a lot of RAM. It amazes me that people complaint that is being limited and that 16GB is barely enough. Heck, at work I manage servers with 12GB of RAM and it's working efficiently and have no issues at all.

Top priority of my desktop plugged into the wall and sitting on the desk is a miniscule improvement in power use and making the box as thing as possible.

Yeah, but it makes more sense to just use the same RAM the rest of the Apple kit uses. The smallest iMac uses LPDDR3 while all the quad-core models uses laptop SODIMM's which is kinda like, what was the point? Is it supposed to use less standby power while "minda-mostly-off"

I'm not really interested in buying a machine that stays off 90% of the time :)

But I'll come back to the original point and problem with the 1.4Ghz iMac and the 2014 MacMini's is that there's no reason to use LPDDR3 unless the design of the machine is meant to be "ultrabook" sized.

Now... Apple... if you want to impress the hell out of me, make the MacMini the same thickness of the MacBook Pro. I know why they can't (the PSU connector is primarily the reason why it's as thick as it is.) They'd have to go back to the external brick to do that.

But I can see reasons not to do that anyway... mechanical hard drives are still less expensive than SSD's.

I'm gonna build my own Hackintosh.

I'm seriously considering this. Apple has too much control over their prison...um walled garden.

I own 4 Mac Mini

used to repair notebooks, ......Mac Mini is my fave. desktop computer

NOW ITS RUINED

Thanks Apple, you just took a DUMP on the Mac Mini.....

then pissed on it to boot

Starting to sound like 2 girls 1 cup. 2 girls 1 Mac mini? :D

What a joke... There's absolutely zero reason to do this...

Pretty much.

IIRC Macs are selling more than PCs so i doubt they care.

RAM is no longer cheap anyways and you still can't find 16GB modules at any decent price. Consumer-level SDRAM has mostly hit a wall.

Last I checked Macs had like 10% market share. Windows is still king in the desktop OS arena. They still have a long way for OS X to be like iOS in terms of popularity.

I'm disappointed with the new Mac Mini too. If you want to make a statement, just don't buy it like I won't. Then Apple will have to do something. They've now got Google & others as competition. I personally don't think a Mac Mini has the capability to be a real media server. I'm waiting for the competition to push Apple to a higher level.

I feel the same way with the new iMac with slower mobile graphics. I'm not going to buy. I'll just stick with my Mac Pros which have faster graphics and can still drive a couple 4k displays.

You can only make a statement with your credit card.

I'm waiting on Apple Pay too. I want to see how it plays out and how secure it is.

LOL. Classic Apple.

Sounds like they are laughing all the way to the bank. If it were any other company I would have some hope that as they make all the parts themselves that they would pass on the savings to us.
I can't believe they are getting away with raising prices by offering underpowered devices on the low end. They don't do that with iPhones. Your getting last years or a two year old model with less drive space for much less than the new model that stays at the same price. Now last years low end is $100 more expensive and the new low end is a model that is probably slower than the low end model from 2011. And the overpriced high end is not even quad core. Its insulting. I was hoping for an upgrade fast enough to boot up into windows to play some games using the iris graphics. At these prices I can get more for less by getting a Steam box. I could even throw in an older mini and still come out cheaper than a high end 2014 mini.
