i just bought a Macbook Pro from Costco today. I got it home and was setting it up while it was plugged in. The battery indicator showed 100%. When I unplug it, it stayed on for about 15 mins then shut off. I plugged it back in and it says that the battery is at 0% and has the service battery indicator. Did I get a dud or is there some kind of calibration or update that needs to be done?

Take it back and exchange it.

Might have been a weird update issue. I just updated the software and it seems to have solved the problem. If it dies again then I'll probably take it back to Coscto. Thanks.

You need to go to the software update pref pane and TURN OFF all "automatic" updates.
You'll still be notified that there are updates waiting, but you won't get any more "surprises" behind your back.

I don't like ANY updates that I don't know about and choose to install voluntarily.

Exactly! I want control over if and when I install updates. And no where is that more relevant that updating from one Mac OS to another. I always download the full installer for the Mac OS, but do not let that process continue with installation. I stop it, make a copy of that installer file in another location on my Mac, and then when I decide, I proceed with the installation process.
