I picked up a late march/early april iMac 24" yesterday.....made in the Czech Republic of all places. My 20" white Core2Duo imac has moved upstaires to make way for the new machine. I have to say i'm very dissapointed with the backlight bleed on this unit.....where my 'old' 20" is completely even on black and more of a black black the 24" is patchy dark grey and has terminal bleed at the base of the screen about 1/3rd the way along from the left and its a really yellow bleed too. I bought the 24" as its meant to be a decent quality panel? compared to the 20" current iMac. My old unit was assembled in CK County Cork and is spot on......i just wanted a bigger screen for my main unit. This one is going back tomorrow and will have another go. I feel that £1149 should really be enough to get a decent quality screen. The keyboard is also dinged and the mouse pointer jumps all over the screen some of the time. QC at Apple is sadly very poor these days!
Does anyone out there have a 24" with no backlight issues? If so then at least I know its worth plugging away to get a decent one. Cheers.

I had three iMac 24" machines with horrible backlight bleeding. Apple could not guarantee that another replacement would not suffer from the same problem, so I accepted a full refund and ordered a Mac Pro and 23" ACD instead.

The Apple tech people I spoke two during my problems with the iMac, including 2nd level, told me that there should be NO backlight bleeding, but it seems to have been a problem on a significant number of 24" iMacs.

Quite honestly I think watching DVDs on a screen with backlight bleeding sucks big time, especially when it is part of one's job.

My advice would be to take it back and ask for a replacement. Ask if you can try the new one out in the store before you take it home.

On the other side of the coin it would seem reading this forum that quite a few 24" iMac owners seem to be quite happy owning a machine that suffers from backlight bleeding.

Apple seem to have problems with all their screens (macbook/pro/iMac). They are currently being sued so hopefully that will give them a boot up the ****!
