And that is before you consider the 2560x1440 ISP monitor that would cost $1700 to get elsewhere.

Or you can get a 30" Dell 3007WFP-HC which has an H-IPS panel for $700 from the outlet store. Which it's really worth a lot less since Dell still needs to make money.

I think the 16:9 display is just shoddy. Cheating me out 409,600 pixels.

Folks, simmer down now. I have a Mac Pro 2.66 and I will be purchasing an iMac Quad i7 after January 10.

a) Mac Pro can run RAID0 or RAID1 - critical for Enterprise/Redundancy
b) Drives can be 'hot-swapped' for example if my photographer needed 800GB of Comstock images in his Mac Pro
c) Graphics card and other components are upgradeable
d) Mac Pro can run 2+ monitors

They are NOT competing products. Will they encode a DVD within seconds of each other? Absolutely. Will the post similar FOLDING results? Sure will.

I think its outstanding that Core i7 found its way into a CONSUMER desktop. Imagine what the next Mac Pro revision has in store...

What are the Geekbench numbers you speak about? Give us some information we can use! :)

AZREOSpecialist, While I don't take too much stock in Geekbench I'm curious what your MP (with the 3580) gets. I'm curious because I'm considering that upgrade and would like to see how it compares to my MP with a 2.66

I just ran it three times and the scores averaged to 11,100 on a 3.33 GHz Intel W3580 Xeon (2009 Quad). Based on these results, I'm guessing you must be getting around 8,800-9,000 at 2.66 GHz?

Geekbench is a pointless "my dick (score) is bigger than yours" benchmark. It does nothing to evaluate graphics or real-world performance. Its extremely unfortunate xBench hasn't been updated to fill this void.

It doesn't matter if the iMac scores exactly the same as a MP in cpu, memory and drive tests. Use a GPU heavy application (pretty much anything these days, even the OS) and the MP will stomp all over the iMac, especially if the MP has a GTX 285 or HD 4870.

"Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his power level?"
---"It's over 9000!"
"WHAT?! 9000?!?!?" ;)

Vegeta - Nappa, Imac's power level just reached 13000.
Nappa - Unbelievable the scouter should be broken.
Vegeta - No the Imac is using Turbo mode

On topic now

This thread is ridiculous. First off why you mac pro users are hating on the i7 imac? Just because its as capable as your mac pro and comes with more ram and hdd space for 400 bucks cheaper. And yea you get a 27 inch led screen with IPS for free. Man apple just made the black Friday sale an everyday thing. Now go upgrade your mac pros with 200 gigs of ram and 10000 gb of hdd so you can boost that score...HATERS

Exactly. The MP has been out for months already, come Jan it will once again blow the iMac away.

Let's just be happy that so much power is now accessible to many!;)

It's not the thread that's ridiculous, it's the price of the base MacPro in the light of the new iMac's. And don't give me that "but it's server parts!" crap. :p

But its server parts! Joking aside, it is clear from the price point that the MP is targeted at non-thrifty professionals. The true intentions of Apple for the MP will be seen in its inevitable Gulftown overhaul. Hopefully they won't keep screwing their highest-end customers over.

(MP in my sig was found on Craigslist for $1,500)

The time has come...

...to run 3DMARK06 and post scores...

AMD just got 39,000 at 7.08GHz
