Yes this is exactly what I was saying. Therefore conserving power while still giving you the speed when you need it. Saves you going to the menu a switching it on before browsing the web or watching youtube.

It's an interesting idea, but I doubt we'd see something like this.

We won't know until it comes out, but I think that generally speaking the more modern hardware is designed to be a bit more power efficient anyway (the story about the recent firmware leak mentioned support for UMTS Power Conservation, for example); I suspect that they are factoring these general issues into the overall hardware and software itself to primarily ensure that they go into some sort of power saving mode when possible.

The ultimate proof will of course come when these new iPhones hit the streets and we can see for ourselves what they do to deal with battery life.

Using 3G all the time has significant benefits if you are using push email, or you make calls while in motion, etc.
