I'm still running a 4S because Apple hasn't made a phone since that I like more than the 4S. The ratio of the iPhone 5 screen doesn't look good and the 6 series is too large. All I really want is a new 4" phone with great battery life!

What happened to 4.3" phones? The Galaxy S2 was the perfect size, not too narrow, not too tall. 4.0 is slightly too small and 4.7 is slightly too big. Solid phone that was. Maybe one day, 'Til that day i'll settle for my slightly too big iPhone 6.

Simple...they need a model they can offer free on contract and that won't be the 6 and 6+ - that will hurt Apple's precious margins (if you are wondering - those models would be good enough for too many people)

Next year, the only models that make sense for Apple are:

iPhone 7,7+
Iphone 6s,6s+
iPhone 4" (good enough to up sell to next models)
bingo. this is likely it. good insight.

6c A8 4"
$449 16GB
$499 32GB

6s A9 4.7"
$549 16GB
$649 64GB

6s+ A9 5.5"
$649 16GB
$749 64GB

7 A10 4.7"
$699 32GB
$849 128GB

7+ A10 5.5"
$799 32GB
$949 128GB

And just deal with it :p

Perhaps two 4 inch models. A cheaper 6c with A8 with 16 & 32gb snd a higher end 6S mini with a9 chip with 16,64, 128gb without 3d touch.

no one wants a 4 inch screen anymore.why would somebody go down to a 4 inch screen if they have a 4.7 or a 5.5 inch screen.a 4 inch screen is way to small this days.

I want a 4" screen. This 5S I have will be run into the ground and then replaced with another 5S unless there is a new iPhone that has a 4" screen.

The 6 and 6+ are simply too big for my needs and I will never, ever, ever buy one.

All I want is a 5S with Apple Pay and I'll buy it in a heartbeat. The NFC is the only thing missing from the 5S that makes it an ideal phone.

There is at least one reason: the 6S size is not meaningfully different than the 5S. Why not a 1, 2, and 3 inch phone, too? For example, the 6S is only .335 inches wider than the 5S. Why cram a 6S into a 5S, without any compromises, simply to accommodate such a minor difference?
It might be minor in your eyes, but that isn't the case for everyone. Both the size (bigger) and shape (rounded edges) make the 6 difficult to grasp for many people. I had one, hated it, returned it and am still using my 5S.

Will you buy the smaller phone if it costs the same as a iPhone 6S? Same internal specs, same price point but smaller screen.
Yes, yes I would. I have a 5s right now, and if Apple released a new 5s2 and only added Applepay to it, I would buy it. I would prefer it to have the same specs as the giant sized phones, but honestly I don't care about RAM or camera or processor ... my current 5s is fine for my needs. I want small size and Applepay. Less than a 4" screen would also be fine for me.

I find it incredible that a company would spent years researching and identifying the ideal dimension of a handheld device and then toss those proportions out the window due to what I believe to be a fad.

In the US as an example, there are .67 televisions for every man, woman, and child in the country while in China that number is .002 - my point is that for a large segment of the world's population, the phone is not only their primary screen, it is their only screen. On the other hand, China accounted for about 4,000 cinema screens in 2008, today they have nearly 30,000 ( on pace to add 30 screens a day) so maybe it's not a fad after all, maybe the overseas market continues to prefer large screens despite the increased access to other cinema/television/PC options, in which case Capitalism...ain't it a bitch. Boo hoo to all of us that prefer the smaller, ideal size.

They need to get rid of the Home Button from the front of the device (or design a much smaller one) regardless of screen size. It adds to the iconic look but makes iPhones too long for the screen estate they are offering.

No, the whole reason the 6 and 6+ exist are to draw Samsung and Droid customers into the Apple ecosystem. Since the release of the iPhone 7 would allow Apple to sell a "free" 6, I seriously doubt they'd pass up the opportunity to offer a product that would draw in the least likely segment of Droid market to currently switch to an iPhone -- the low end.

There will definitely be a 6 and 6 Plus offered on the low end, wherever the 4" phone ends up.

I'm just going to say it, won't make any sense if Apple doesn't put NFC/Apple Pay in this device. If they still hope to make a push for it. However, I personally would still go to the 4inch (with or without Apple Pay). As much as I personally like Apple Pay, it's just not wide spread enough, and I don't see Apple making enough effort for a push.

I personally find Apple Pay pretty handy. I'm in the UK and Apple Pay can be used anywhere that supports contactless payments, which is rapidly increasing. I don't think it's Apple that need to make a push with it anymore.

Since it takes more engineering an effort to fit all the current and new technology into a smaller package, not to mention keeping the battery life long, I would be perfectly willing to pay more for the smaller iPhone then the current flagship models.
In other words the smaller iPhones should be the premium products.:)

Being a developer, I have all iPhone sizes. I prefer to use the 4" 5s as my phone, but am limited by 64 GB storage.
I really hope they bring a 4" model back into the "top spec tier", and rev in sync with 4.7 and 5.5" models.
Also, I really doubt Apple will add additional screen sizes to the phone line in the foreseeable future.
The >4" sizes were driven mainly by demand in Asia. That should be obvious to anyone (like me) who's ridden a subway over there in the last few years. So, it may be best for them to sell a 4.7" gimp model on the low end - this would help Asian penetration.

I really hope it'll come in a plastic shell. The 5c was my first iPhone. As much as I like my 6s, I didn't fall in love with it like I did my 5c.

I even jumped from a Note 3 to the 5c, that's how happy I was with the device.

Something about that blue color and the feel of the device. If the 5c had touch ID, I'd still be using it now!
