I've deployed a good handful of GTX 960 2GBs to our edit workstations; those cards only require one 6-pin power connector. Looks like you don't have to give up too much in the way of CUDA cores and clock rate to reduce the power load. Interesting.

Fascinating...I wonder if that's caught Apple's eye for a possible 7,1 configuration. Nah...

I have a 5,1 with a MVC 7970 and a 30 inch Apple cinema display. It works great for FCP, affinity, and Logic, which are the primary uses of the machine. I often see comments to the effect that NVIDIA cards are better for gaming. Does anyone have an idea whether this sort of card would be better for gaming?

Pretty sure the 7970 still trumps a low end NVIDIA option like the 950, which is the bottom their pile. 7970 was top of the line, comparative to NVIDIAs GTX x80 cards. It and the GTX 680 were competitors, so it's equivalent today is ~ the 960 class of cards. 970 would be an upgrade gaming wise. I'd go straight to 980 or wait to see what the upcoming Pascal generation might offer.

In Open CL compute the 7970 almost matches the best Nvidia cards but at a fraction of the price.
