Although I agree fully about the Audio and Video, I do think thats the only thing its lacking. However, the lack is AV support is not down to the Adium Dev Team at all...

We have some people working on it. It's just... nontrivial amounts of work. Google Talk compatible voice is very likely to be the first done. AIM would likely be the second. No ETA on any of it though.

That's exactly why I would love Apple to open up their iChat framework for other apps to use. This way we could have all the nice features of both worlds.

What exactly are the legal issues between Apple and AOL, though, as iChat uses the AOL messaging infrastructure / is compatible with AOL? The biggest barrier to seeing multi-client video messaging is that the big three (AOL, MSN, and Yahoo) each use a proprietary and closed technology.

That's a good question. Another reason why Apple, Google and others should push for Jabber as the main IM protocol.

Different IM protocols are the biggest BS in history. Imagine having 3 or 4 different email apps to be able to send email to your friends...

I created a custom dock icon for myself, and with the new beta, it seems to put its own little highlight over it for an alert. When I recieve a message, it shows a little 1 in a red circle on the dock - any way to get rid of that??

I've been compiling the beta from source about once a week for the past 2 months. I don't have any major issues with it. The official released betas I would download had issues and eventually crash. Since I switched to use the SVN source, those problems are gone.

ok, so a friend recommended that i switch to adium as my chat client. Should I download the beta version you guys have been talking about (http://adiumx.com/beta/beta.html), or from adiums official site (http://www.adiumx.com/) ??

thanks

Download the official release unless you:

A) Are comfortable with using beta software (no n00bs, sorry)

B) Need some feature the beta has right now (pictures inline, the file transfer improvements, etc).

Otherwise the official Adium release is just ducky. I use it.

Normally I would recommend the beta since they are really no less stable than the official releases, but this last beta has been unusually buggy and unstable. Might be best to start off with the non-beta release even if you are normally comfortable running beta software.

Once the devs get things cleaned up after this library change I suspect the betas will be just as stable as they used to be.

On another subject, is anyone else bothered by how bloated Adium has become? I understand this is pretty typical of OSS, but in the beginning Adium sold itself on being a small lightweight IM app. Now it uses more RAM than any other app on my computer (other than PS) and uses more CPU while inactive than any other app on the computer. Why does an IM client need hundreds of megs of RAM?

I used to use Adium because I really liked it. Now I mostly use it because it sucks less. Thats said, it is still the first thing I download on a new computer (followed immediately by Camino).

In the Preferences under Advanced: Messages. "Display a message count badge"

Eh? I know the developers try to keep it from getting bloated, not adding too many features, etc. Adium (1.0b17) is far from using the most RAM or CPU (inactive) on my system.

is adium beter than aMSN?

Depends on your definition of better.

aMSN:
- Supports webcam
- Supports winks and other animated stuff
- Supports the other kind fo MSN display name
- Basically aMSN and Mercury provide the most complete MSN / Windows Live support on MacOS

Adium:
- Much cleaner interface
- Very configurable
- Can do AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, etc at the same time
- Good *text IM* support on all of those networks

Does that make sense? You have to choose based on what you need/want. I use Adium 99% of the time and switch to aMSN or Mercury if someone wants to webcam.

If you're looking at VSIZE, don't. It doesn't mean anything useful. If you have a >50-60MB RSIZE, that would be a bug, and a nasty one. Please get in touch with me privately if that's the case and we can try to track it down.

Part of the reason b1-b15 were rather large was that they had to run a JVM, which is about 10-15MB. We considered it worth the memory usage to get better AIM support, but since then a) libgaim has improved, and b) we've decided the java bridge is too issue-laden to use. So our ram usage should be back down in the 20-40MB range.

Sorry to be such a n00b, but what exactly does growl do in conjunction with adium? I have the plugin setup and everything, but I haven't noticed any difference yet...

This beta kept blowing up every time I opened it. I finally just went back to the rather ancient .89

Sorry no one ever responded to your post... Okay, you have Growl itself installed, right (a how-to)? Once you do this, I believe you must also either use a custom notification scheme or else enable the Visual Notifications presets from Adium -> Preferences -> Events -> Event Preset.

Growl gets triggered by Adium events that are set to make Growl notifications of things that happen in Adium. That is, when, for instance, a contact comes online, Adium can do a variety of things -- bounce the dock icon, make a sound, or tell Growl to notify you. Adium has to be set in this preference pane to tell Growl to notify you when things happen.

P.S. I finally got Adium 1.0b19 and I am very impressed! Netdog, no idea why it's crashing for you so much... could be a plug-in or xtra you're using from Adium 0.89? I am using my existing Adium 2.0 folder and everything, and so far 1.0 is very stable for me. I finally got Firefox 2, also... I had to finally just archive and delete my profile from 1.5.x before installing 2. :(

Probably difficult/impossible/unallowed but I'd like the MSN games. I was insane at minesweeper flags and solitaire showdown. Bootcamp is my option now, and its not worth the reboot.

apfhex - what kind of software is the one that you have in the pic.
Thanks

I can't even begin to imagine where the Apple "Hi, I'm a Mac" commercials would go if Microsoft released Mac versions of Minesweeper and Solitaire. :D
