I have wondered if the AirPods Pro could replace hearing aids. Everything that I’ve heard, including from someone who uses hearing aids is that in some cases they can but in other cases they can’t. That is, for those who don’t have significant hearing loss but could use a boost, AirPods Pro might just work fine, but for those who need something more significant, hearing aids is what you’ll need.

So I don’t think AirPods Pro or the likes will replace an entire category of hearing aids.

So is it like Transparency Mode but with extra volume boost from the microphones?

It would be nice if they could detect someone speaking close to you when you have Noise Cancellation on, and allow the voice to breakthrough. That would be super neat. Optional of course so it doesn't happen in certain environments.
That seems to be pretty much what it does, if you turn ambient noise reduction up a bit at the same time. It only amplifies the voice, and makes it feel "closer".

Of course it isn’t a full replacement; unless you want to be able te hear for just 3 hours without charging..

“Grandma, take off your earphones I’m trying to talk to you.” ::blank stare::
More like:

Grandma: “take off your earphones I’m trying to talk to you.”

Me wearing Conversation Boost AirPods: ::blank stare::

Interesting. Absurd they wouldn't be covered if someone needs one to function.
Glad you think that and I agree.

(Edit: I had to redact the following public service suggestion not to run afoul of MR politics bot.)

If you’ll like to help get that changed, please xxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and ask xxxx xxxx xx xxxxxxx of xxxx xxxxx’x x.xxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxx.

That xxxx, xxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxx xx xxxxxxxxx (xx xxxx xxx XX xxxxxxxxxxx), expands Xxxxxxxx to include hearing coverage (xxx xxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxx.)

Spent 30 minutes last night trying to get my Pro's to upgrade. On the charger, off the charger, in the case out of the case, unpair-repair. Power cycled the phone, connected to my watch, connected to my Macbook, nothing.
Me too! Feels like the AirTag firmware which was only available to certain % of devices at first then later expanded to more, then all. Anyone know if the same happens with AirPods?

Apple would never try to replace the entire category. It will identify the profitable sweet spot of that market, see if it can offer something something significantly better than the incumbents, then, if so, enter it and improve the customer experience while hoovering up the profits (and driving consolidation amongst the incumbent manufacturers.)

Same experience here. Charged them and case to 190% and put next to phone overnight and when I reentered Ssettings they had updated.

I was surprised at how far I had to drill down in accessibility to turn on as the Settings search revealed nothing for conversation boost (aside: why does iOS have such a desperately crappy Settings search engine?)

Even activating the feature is kinda hidden as it’s not adjacent to the long press volume slider in control center and is instead found under the Hearing Icon, and only when transparency is activated.

Maybe it’s easier to use once activated but on set up, it’s really difficult to find and easy to overlook.

This was the iOS 15 feature I’ve been most looking forward to and I’m looking forward to getting some experience with it.

Ahhh... that's where the quick switch is. Under the hearing icon in control center. I figured there had to be a way to just "quickly" turn it on and off and not just leave it on all the time (without going all the way through the many steps in the settings app)

Thanks!
