We have a new AEBS upstairs and an ATV3 downstairs (using wifi). Is there any advantage in using our old airport express (g) downstairs to extend the wireless network? The ATV is running fine over wifi now. I'm mostly just curious about this.

No benefit to your Apple TV if it's working well as-is. If you have weak wifi coverage in other areas of that floor (e.g. on your iPhones/iPads/laptops/etc.) then you could use the Express as a network extender to help that issue. Or you could use it as an AirPlay receiver with some speaker; I use one for my deck speakers.
