I definitely agree. I've been waiting to buy the 15" since January when the new AlBooks were released. 12" is just too small and 17" is just too big...

I honestly think they will be released by WWDC in June. Whether they are G4 based or 970 based is really up in the air, but for Apple to wait any longer than that they would risk losing market share to the Dells of the world.

I gotta say even if they are released at WWDC in June, we probably won't be able to get our hands on one until September... Ship dates were really messed up on the 17" orders, and especially if it is a brand new architecture (970) they may still be in the middle of R&D and just announce at WWDC.

September?!

I can't wait that long!

Remember, it's may now...

So, if it get's launched on wwdc (?) in june (when in june?) when will it then be in the shops?

I can buy a brand new 12" with super drive right now in the shops, but I DON'T want to wait to september.

I really want one now, but I think I can wait till june-july, before buying one, but then it has to be in shops.

When in june is the wwdc? Early or late june?

And how many fps does the 12" perform in warcraft 3 and medal of honor?

Thanks!

Well if you wait until the beggining of July then you will know for sure what is coming out. If you don't like it or it's not going to be available right away you haven't lost anything just go by the previous version immediately and a reduced price.

Getting a 15" TiBook now

I have been agonizing over whether to get a current 15" TiBook or wait for the 15" AlBook (there's a sale on now at MacWarehouse making me think hard about it).

I think I am going to bite the bullet and buy the current 15" TiBook, for the following reasons:

1.) I don't think we'll see the 15" AlBook for at least a couple months. Why? Because the 12" and 17" AlBooks are too close together in speed/features, and Apple isn't eager to bring in another machine so close to those two. I'd say they'll revamp the 15" when they can speed-bump the 17" to keep it a premium product.

2.) When they release the 15" AlBook, retailers won't have the deals on it (free RAM, battery, etc.) that they do for older machines for at least a month or so. So that means either waiting a month or paying extra for things then that I can get for free now.

3.) I think you can just pitch all those "970-based 15-inch PB" rumors out the window. First, because the first-generation 970 is built for speed and not power management. Second, because there's NO WAY Apple would put a faster CPU in their mid-range computer model! Unless they're putting 970s (very doubtful, IMHO) in the 17" as well, or they're pricing the 15" above the 17", it doesn't make sense.

4.) While I'd love a 15" AlBook, the 15" TiBook is Good Enough For Me. The Al case, built-in BT and 802.11g sound really cool. But what's there now meets my needs, and I can start enjoying it now.

Of course, I have gone back and forth on this issue a lot over the past couple days. I think I'm going to spring for the TiBook tomorrow ... but I'll be checking the boards here to see if anyone can come up with some good counter-arguments to hold off. :)

Yeah, I'm doing the same, or I will buy an 12" powerbook with superdrive.

My only consern with the current 15" is if it's durable?

A friend of mine has a 17" PB and keeps telling me I need to hold out for the new machine for a variety of reasons including the more scratch-resistant case and recessed hinges. But another friend who has a GHz 15" Ti tells me that it's very durable and case scratches aren't a worry unless you tend to carry your PB around in loose bags w/o a sleeve or other scratch-prone activities.

Part of the reason I'm attracted to the TiBook is that they have had several iterations to work all the kinks/flaws out of the enclosure (viz. the improved AP range of these latest models, no "flexing" of the case like the first TiBooks had), and they might not have done so yet with the Al case.

Still, I will be interested to see if anyone here will present a good counter-argument, since I'm still willing to hold off. My plan was to wait until the new machines were introduced and then pick old or new ... but recently I have wondered if Apple would exhaust the old stock (like the iPod) before releasing the new one, which would mean I wouldn't have the chance then to pick a new one or cherry-pick a reduced-price old model. However, I may just be way too cautious ... any thoughts from anyone else in a similar situation?

If you see in another new thread, the 15"ti is discounted, and that means a new one is on the way..(I hope!)

Come on! We're all entitled to our own opinions here, but there's real evidence Apple wants to make a fast and decisive transition to the PowerPC 970.

If Apple was just releasing another G4 Powerbook, they would've done it already. There's obviously going to be more to this Aluminum PB than just the alloy.

Sure the 970 is built for speed, but information suggests that the low-speed (1.4 GHz, I think) processors actually use less power than the hungry-hungry G4 (you know, the G4 isn't the ideal portable processor either).

And I wouldn't be surprised if Apple overhauled the entire Powerbook line at WWDC. Then there'll be no problems with releasing a speedy GOBI iBook this summer.

I wouldn't buy a 12" Powerbook now, in fact I wouldn't buy any Apple laptop right now. Dennis88, the WWDC keynote is June 23. If you want to at least make a fully informed purchase, I'd wait until then (to see what Apple announces).

Personally I've been able to get a 15" Ti for a few months from the local University for nearly $600 off but I think it's a mistake to think that the deals that are going on now are the best you will get. When a new 15" comes out the current ones can only get cheaper.

new al 15,4'' powerbook in may

according to macmotion.de MacBidouille reports that we can expect new pbs this month.

The reason for not releasing a new Powerbook 15" is most likely because it's the only Powerbook that boots into OS 9 (that's what Apple store Sweden told me).

The new Powerbooks will most definitely not have a 970-chip in them.

Any idea if there will be a price cut when the new AL 15 PB will be released. What about the price? Cheaper than current 15' TI? Same as the current 15' TI? More?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the 15" Powerbook the only OS 9 booting machine currently made by Apple?

Well, besides the special order Power Mac. Oh, and the eMacs.

Nevermind.

:(

What was the purpose of this posts?

I believe the 15" powerbooks will see a price cut when released. All the other new macs that have been released this year have seen a price cut over the models from last year. The 15" is the last mac that was released last year.
