Is another way to 'page down' without using the Fn key? I do that on my laptop, but it doesn't work as well on the full size aluminum desktop keyboard since the Fn is in a different place.

Full size as in "has number pad"? If it has a number pad, it has actual paging keys in the vicinity of the fn key.

>> I finally figured it out. turns out it was the one disk that was having problems, not sure why. i have played 5 DVDs since then, and they have been fine.

I had the same problem. Usually it's a scratch or something on the disc. Sometimes it never works right because it's just defective. I have had a very small number (1) of DVD's that don't play in the mac but will play in a DVD player. I just guess that one of the two is out of adjustment or the disc was pressed oddly.

>> yes, you are right about all the above. the problem i have run into, is there are a few thousand songs (out of 10,000) that are not 'tagged' properly, and thus have *only* a name, no artist, no album, no genre, etc...when looking in finder, they are listed as unknown artist....i am frustrated, b/c i dont have the time or the gumption to go back and 'tag' all of them. i dont know what to do at this point...any suggestions?

Happens to me occasionally if the network is down or slow, etc. You can select the tracks and re-fetch the data. I had a user rip all of their CD's on a MBP with not network connection. All came out gobblldy gook. I had them select all of the tracks and re-fetch the information. It took a while, but with the network up the data started filling in. Yet, with all of this technology, I still occasionally have to fill in information because cddb/Grace Notes doesn't have the info.

>> Turns out, that it is only Google Earth that is glitchy. I dont know why this is. everything else is smooth.

I've had issue with it on both mac and PC and just consider the source. Usually uninstalling and reinstalling fixes it...

>> I have made imports into mp3s...however i think i may becoming too resistant to new digital formats. if m4p and/or AAC are the new better formats, then I simply need to adapt and go with them. but i do still have problems, in that i cannot load an m4p file onto my 'mp3' player, and no, it's not an ipod, it's just a cheapie (but i like it so!)

In advanced in itunes you can change the format and have all subsequent imports saved in that format. That one setting also gives you the ability to change on the fly the format of any track. (Well, almost any track I think) You can find the mp3 and copy it out and then change it back if you want. I have some MP3's in my AAC files. It's a style issue...

>> yes, you are right. I am getting more well adjusted. i was hoping for miracles, and unreasonably so. someone on this thread asked me 'why did you even get a mac if you are so resitant to it?', and it is b/c i acknowledge its superiority to windows/pc...just a matter of getting used to it.

I use windows, mac and unix and find that I like each one nearly equally. It freaks people out sometimes. Although I do recommend Macs for many people, I find having the variety great and productive.

>>I found the driver, and things work groovy now...except for the fact that it wont fax from my pdf ...so that's still a problem.

HP abandoned the number one scanner that I love over all others. They refused to put out a driver for Leopard and actually suggested that I 'just go out and buy a new one'. Yeah! I did end up buying a new one. Mac that runs Leopard and my older mac runs the older OS X. Imagine the gall... Just go out and buy a new one... Dip shirts...

one problem that has been consistent since day 1...is the "Spotlight" feature. it does not find files like i want them too. I know it is intuitive, and will find characters/words *within* documents, however, it is not finding the ones i want. Specifically, I have about 7000 pdfs of medical literature (i am a researcher), and i have them all archived properly in the document name. however when i type in specifically what i know the document name to be, it will not retrieve that document. it's odd, and frustrating. i even went through re-indexing the computer. any thoughts on this one??

That's an interesting issue. Did it ever get resolved?

I answered these just in case it might help someone in the future...

yeah...i'm talking about the one with the numberic keypad. Is there a way to make another key into the Fn key? it seems a little ackward where it is at and the one on my laptop is in the lower lefthand corner is far more convenient.

There may be, but it would be difficult. You can change the effect of 4 modifier keys (Ctrl, Option, Cmd and CapsLock), but fn is not one of the things you can change those to. Maybe they will fix that in the future.
