I had the same thing happen. At first only the right AirPod would squeal when pressed, but then I tried swapping them around — left in the right ear, right in the left — and the one that was fine started squealing too.
So it looks more like a software or firmware quirk rather than a defect in a single earbud

My AirPods Pro 3 are experiencing the same issue. When I enable noise cancellation mode, my earbuds emit a sharp whistling sound while I'm chewing food, looking downward, or lying flat with my head tilted to one side. I returned them to the official store and purchased a new pair, but the same problem persists. As a user in China, I've found many others sharing identical experiences. Some users even reported that during flights, when attempting to activate noise cancellation, the whistling sound continued throughout the entire journey until the plane landed. This seems to indicate a potential flaw in the product design. I consulted with the Genius Bar staff, and they informed me that this issue might be improved through future firmware updates. However, they couldn't guarantee it. I've now decided to return the product and will temporarily refrain from purchasing AirPods Pro 3 until this problem is completely resolved.
I must say, after a day, the problem came back, so I returned them and are now wearing the wired ones. I will also refrain from buying another pair until this problem is acknowledged and resolved.

Just posted this question on another thread about similar experiences. Just out of curiosity, did you guys experience squeal when blowing nose with AirPods in? I got very loud squeal in left ear. So unbearable I sent my APP3 back and bought a new pair of APP2.

I experienced this with the original APP but not the 2 and 3. Figured it was just an issue with the original APPs but I guess I had a defective set.

I’m on my second pair of APP3 now. Same issues present. This has to be a software issue.

Whistling sound isn’t reproducible every time, however I can consistently force them to cutout covering both my ears. Reproducing what happens when wearing a hat that covers my ears of when lying in bed.

Have you guys tried a one size smaller ear tips? For me it, if not completely eliminate, but radically lessened the problem. I hardly hear whistling anymore. Still I think software update is needed as the source of the problem is most likely settings of the internal mics.

I did try all the tips sizes, even tho some did minimize the whistle sound, it was still annoying to have it on. Sometimes it would start whistling at a lower volume and get increasingly louder.

After using the APP3s a number of times in a noisy environment I'm still getting the initial white noise sound. Interestingly it's only in a noisy environment and it only noticeably happens with the first bud I insert and it dies down once the bud is inserted so it feels as though it might be some kind of issue with the in ear microphone, the algorithm and the pressure of inserting the bud.

It equalises quite quickly and doesn't happen again so hopefully a tweak in the FW will solve it.

Wow first time I’ve noticed a difference in AirPods firmware. The whistling is gone.

No it's not.
After few days (my airpods we fine since 2 of october) today it has returned.
I have newest firmware (8A358).

Even when there is no active connection (Iphone and Apple Wathed switched off) there is still this high pitched noise in left ear.

The FW update seems to remove the whistling on insertion for me but if I press a bud while they are in use then I get a quick whistle but not as bad. I'm guessing it's caused by the pressure of pressing the bud in on the mic and they have either delayed startup of the mic at insertion or something similar. Much better though.

The beta firmware ?

I've done some more testing. After changing to a smaller ear tip size the whistling was much less of a problem. Still some remains but it's very faint compared to what it was before. So the next thing I tried was plugging the pods to opposite ears. I put he left pod in my right ear and so on. The whistling was still somewhat audible in my right ear using the other pod that worked completely fine in the other ear. My conclusion is that is has more to do with the anatomy of an ear than anything related to firmware or hardware of the pods. Still I hope the situation could be improved with a firmware updates going forward.

Yesterday and today, same old situation - whistling.
But I think I found a remedy. I think it's a result of moisture.
Try to unplug the (left) ear tip and dry it. As far as I've noticed (yesterday and today), it helped.

It can whistle briefly, if you cover up the mics while inserting in your ear or modifying fit in ear. That’s all.

I had this problem with my airpods today.
I used them yesterday for a jog while it rained, so I suppose they got wet (didn’t notice it yesterday tho) and didn’t dry well while on a case. Today I took them outside the case for a few hours to dry and now they work normally again. I don’t know if this helps anyone else but worked for me.
