New Apple ID... Keep Data?

To this point, my wife and I have used 1 apple ID between our phones for ease of sharing apps, syncing calendars, photos etc. With family sharing now an option, I'm thinking of using separate IDs.

So I can set up my new phone from a backup. With hers, I assume I have to set it up as a new phone. Is there a way to retain her texts? She doesn't have app data she cares about.

You can use a third party app to save the texts to a file or hard drive. You won't be able to save them to the new account where they will be normally retained with other saved files.
