New apple product in elevator

ok at the risk of sounding liking an idiotic Newb I just had to ask.... what's the whole thing with a new product being found in an elevator? I always see reference to this but dont know the story behind it. i tried searching but didnt find anything on it except for the references to it. Can someone fill me in? and excuse my ignorance as I have only been in the Macworld for 18 months..... And if this happened within the last 18 months then I'll really feel stupid.

If I recall correctly it all started with the rumoured "iHome". It was a rumoured product that Apple was set to release and a picture of the box for the new product was posted on this forum. The picture of the box was taken in an elevator.

Everything was criticised, the shadows in the picture and the fonts used. It ended up being fake.
