Mayfair Mall was like a zoo. Going to the Apple Store wasn't my first priority, so I didn't actually get to the mall until about 10am, but at that point the line outside the store stretched at least half the length of the mall, maybe longer. They were letting people in in small groups at a time. I'd estimate people must have had to wait 1-2 hours to get in by the time my wife and I left (the mall, that is - we gave up on the store and decided we'll come back in a couple of weeks when normality is restorted). I'm in a walking cast and didn't fancy standing that long, especially since there was nothing I was actually going to the store to buy.
The store looked very nice from what I saw of it. The line of people waiting for the store was, uh, interesting. I'm sorry, but most Mac geeks seem to fit exactly the same profile as PC geeks. 50% (of the obvious serious cases) looked like they were suffering from malnutrition, the other 50% looked like they'd perhaps eaten one or two of the malnourished ones for breakfast that morning, and all of them looked as though they'd spent their entire lives in caves. Where were all the healthy tanned trendy graphics designers and arty bohemians?
What I did find interesting about the line was that it *wasn't* all geeks. There were some relatively normal people willing to queue for all that time, and a surprisingly large number of senior citizens too, although they were far outnumbered by the hardcore Mac geeks.
The parking lot outside was amusing too. I lost count of the number of Apple stickers on cars, also saw GRFX DSNR (or something along those lines) and MAC GEEK and a couple of other obviously Mac related plates.
So did anybody actually wait in line? I bumped into one person I knew, but although he's the owner of multiple Macs, he also didn't plan on spending his Saturday morning standing around.
